Slash
Can anybody make a suggestion for a new rifle for a middle aged man to use hunting this year?
scottb
I can recommend a bunch of rifles, but it would narrow it down considerably if you tell us what you want to hunt and where you plan on hunting.
doubleA
Some more information would be heplful.............. Budget Type of game intended Location/Terrain/Distance Firearm Preference ie. bolt, pump, auto etc Do you want something others can use such as spouse, child? and so on........ Today, there are firearms to fit any bill, you just have to give some parameters.
Slash
Quote It would mostly be used for deer hunting and I'd like to keep it under $500 but if there's one that is normally higher than that, I'd be open to either paying a little more or buying it second hand if I can find someone who has one. Semi-Auto preferably, No idea on distance. This is a quote from my cousin Brianna, she would like to buy her husband a new gun before hunting season as an early birthday present. She think he would prefer the semi-auto and he is the only one who will be using the rifle.
Shaun_300
I don't think there's a semi auto on the market that's under $500. A Remington 7400 or Browning BAR would probably be best if you could find one second hand. You're probably looking at at least $700 for a 7400 and even more for a BAR brand new. Might be able to find a nice used one for around what she wants to spend. Assuming it's for deer I'd either get a .308, .30-06 or .270. Slash
Ok, so what about a bolt action, if she decides on a bolt instead of a semi auto, can he really complain? Besides, semi-auto is what she THOUGHT he might want. Think about the guns you have and what you prefer, bolt action works just fine don't it LOL. Any ideas there Shaun? Shaun_300
I was going to say I'm not a fan of semi auto rifles, but everyone has their own opinion and likes when it comes to guns. A really good, reasonably priced bolt action is a Ruger M77 Mark II. I got one in a .25-06 at Christmas for $600 (+tax) brand new. I love this rifle! Smooth action, nice shooting, very accurate! I'd definitely buy another one. Another inexpensive bolt I've heard of is the Savage, I don't have any personal experience with one, maybe someone else here does though. A used Remington 700 wouldn't be a bad choice either! That's another very high quality rifle.
redkneck
Check out a Savage. Great gun for the money.

coles
remington sps in 270, 25-06, 30-06, 308, 7mm-08, 7mm mag ruger hawkeye in the same calibers savage in the same, possibly even a stevens which is made by savage but a more budget minded option tikka is a good rifle also. I would tell her to either take him in and pick what feels best for him or to buy him a gift certificate to get what he wants.
wtnhunt
You should be able to find a bolt gun in that price range without any problems. Savage model 10's are pretty accurate rifles, might also check on remington model 700's, have seen them at stores new for under $500. For caliber take your pick, anything from a .243 up. Slash
Ok, thanks a ton guys. I like the idea of buying a gift certificate for him to go in and get what HE wants, not what she thinks he wants, can't go wrong there.
Heavy Metal
Another option would be a lever action Winchester or Marlin in .30-30. Theirs just something more classic about holding one and hunting with one. Can be scope mounted just like any other rifle. Used ones and some new can easily be had for around $500. And it's a timeless piece of history he'll always be proud to pull out.
coles
i bought a marlin 30-30 with the camo stock and blued steel last year when i worked at a sporting goods store. it had a little tiny bit of rust on it but i bought it for $135 since i was an employee but they were only asking $150 for it for everyone else. Great little gun. Havent shot anything with it other than rabbits and gophers but it stays in my back seat all year long. Cant go wrong there unless you have some long shots to deal with

Ethan Givan
I bought a brand new bolt action rifle last year. Its a Stevens Model 200 in .308 winchester, which is made by Savage, and it cost about $400. It shoots really good.
bucknut
Tikka T3 lite in 270 wsm:)
jared264mag
Can't hardly ever go wrong with a .25-06 or a .270 The 7mm-08 seems to be a nice caliber as well
doubleA
Having additional info can be a huge help as the OP turns out, the firearm isnt for him so that changes things a bit. Quote Ok, thanks a ton guys. I like the idea of buying a gift certificate for him to go in and get what HE wants, not what she thinks he wants, can't go wrong there. Now that's what I am talking about! While GC's are not as personal they do allow the recipient the choice to get what he or she really wants. dbHunterNY
The gift certificate is a great idea. Otherwise I think the best all around gun is a Remington Model 7600 pump action in 30-06 or a comparable caliber. This topped with weaver rings that bring the scope up a little allowing you to use the open sights or the scope is a great combo. It's got a free floated barrel that's accurate, but the pump action is almost as quick as a semi-auto.
m gardner
Walmart in our area is dumping all it's Weatherby (Howa) Vanguard rifles with the brown spiderweb stocks. They are on sale for $350.00 here and are a deal. I picked one up tonight in 30-06. They come in 300 weatherby, 7mm rem mag, 30-06 and 270 win. I couldn't resist it especially when I saw the target. It's one hole at 100 yards. Yeah I know it's from a machine, but that's a good barrel. They may be doing this nationwide because they aren't stocking them anymore. Hoosierbuck
Mark- When I was out there earlier this spring they had them at $390. Good deal on waiting for the markdown. Lots of good suggestions, but the GC wins the day. HB
toddpipkin
Y'all beat me to the Weatherby Vanguard suggestion. My .30/06 will shoot 1/2" groups, all day long, with Winchester "Super-X" (silver box) factory ammo, with 150-gr. Power-Point bullets. Well, it's ACTUALLY my wife's rifle; she won it at a Friends of NRA Banquet. But she lets me use it when I ask nicely. This gun retails for only $399 !!! Edited July 18, 2009 by wing_0_nut
