redkneck
Just screwing around tonight after snatching the fork tubes off my bike for seal replacement and I got guns on the brain. I've been considering getting another varmint rifle. I got to wondering about getting a barrel for my NEF (was looking at the groundhog slaying in the varmint room ) and was checking out NEF's site. Who in here has shot a .204 Ruger? I've never shot one, the only 4000fps round I've ever shot was my buddy's .17 Rem. I'm just wondering what type of accuracy could I expect out of a bull barrel on a gun like that (as opposed to a bolt action with barrel pressed solid into receiver). Could also pick up a .22 hornet, but that 204 looks WICKED! :bat:
toddyboman
Have a buddy how had one.....He didn't have much trouble shooting prairie dogs with his at 200 and 300 yards. His was a bolt action Rem 700.
redkneck
Well, unfortunately I dont have those long shots, and really cant justify the thing except for a gravel pit near here where I can shoot as far as the eye can see. But, even though I wouldnt plop down a few hundred bucks for a rifle, I was thinking about getting a barrel for around $130 and having another toy. It would prob be like the .22 mag I wanted so bad years ago but now it just mostly collects dust in my closet.
doubleA
The little 204 Ruger is a nice little cartridge, if given the choice I would pick it above the 22 Hornet. It's probably a little more expensive to shoot over the latter but gives you alot more range and much flatter trajectories. I have a 204 in a CZ varminter and the accuaracy is great with handloads. I have no experience with the CF handi rifles so I cant say what to expect with their accuracy. I would say go for it, $130 isnt bad for a different caliber nowdays. You might need a higher magnification scope to take full advantage of that hot little round.
redkneck
Thanks, Charlie. I was thinking kinda the same thing. For that kind of money, it's hard to go wrong. And I know I'd need some reasonable optics to shoot it out to a respectable range.
