c_lou
I have narrowed down my dog search and the Australian Shephard, Boxer, & Viszla are a few dogs that I am considering Does anybody have one of these breeds? I have a few questions and would like to chat. Thanks
jm23494
My aunt and uncle have had Viszlas every since I can remember. They are great dogs and seem to have the same temperment as a Lab. They have a ton of energy and make some pretty good upland bird dogs as well.
Heavy Metal
Boxers are great dogs, for family, kids, and guests. They're also good watchdogs. Mine is a raccoon/possum killing machine as well. He lives in the barn and his soul purpose is to protect the chickens! And he does! In two years he's totaled 4 coons and at LEAST 4 possums and not a scratch on that dog I kid you not. My wife also grew up with an awesome boxer named Brandy. Still around when I started dating my wife in Highschool. Australian Shepherds are a "working" dog. LIke a "heeler" or a "border collie" they are hard working very high strung dogs. They require hard exercise and work regularly if not ever day when they are young or they can become destructive real fast. Australians are usually not good with strangers or guests and are skittish. They are excellent watch dogs. I've had Australian Shepherd and healers. Really neat dogs, I would love to have one again but I've come to realize those dogs were bread for one reason and one reason alone. WORK. Herding cattle and live stock, period. I've also never been around a AS, heeler or other cow dog in old age that wasn't a nipper and growler....which I never liked! They get all crazy in the head I think!!!:hammer1:
Texan_Til_I_Die
Are you just looking for a family pet? Any of those will make good household dogs. If you want one to tag along on hunts, stay away from the Aussie. A large percentage of them are gun shy. I've never seen anyone take a boxer into the field, so I don't know about them. Personally, I'd choose the Viszla just because I like to take my dogs hunting with me.

Heavy Metal
I don't think i've ever heard of a "Viszla". What is it?

jesse8953
My moms neighbor has a australian shepard. He bites people after they turn there backs. You can't judge a hole breed because of one dog.I'm sure all would be great dogs.Depends how you raise them.I have 2 rotts and they are great family dogs.My step daughter is disabled and Whiskey and Gin are great with her.Best of luck on your decision. Heavy Metal
My moms neighbor has a australian shepard. He bites people after they turn there backs. This is not uncommon with herder breeds. AS, healers and borders are all heal biters by instinct. I got the exit treatment from a Queensland Healer about 12 years ago leaving a farmers ranch. Put two nice puncture holes on both sided of my knee! These breeds also enjoy chasing cars and trying to teach the tires a lesson!!

c_lou
The only thing about the Aussie's I worry about is them trying to herd the kids.
Casey
its all about socialization. If you socialize your dog with others and all kinds of people they should make great pets, no matter the breed of dog. At a young age, get those out there and let many people handle them. bugleward
best dog Hey Guys: Most everyone is right here. It really depends on what you want. If you want the best buddy and loyal get the ausie. Their problems are they are protective and ultra loyal to family. If you have kids they will be well protected and yes sometimes they may be herded but that is easily broken. Strangers are not always welcome. My ausie was the best dog I have ever seen for a dog and a kid dog for MY kids. Any others were carefully watched all the time while visiting. Of these three the ausie is by far the smartest and would by loyal to the death. If you are wanting to go afield for any type of hunting then for sure the Viszla. They are a fairly versitile hunting dog but can hunt for themselves and not just you. When that happens sometimes they just take off. So running off is a bit of a problem with that dog. They can be a bit to rowdy for small kids. Not mean rowdy but just energetic rowdy. They are less loyal than the other two but very alert and can be good watch dogs not good guard dogs. The bulldog is fun and ready to play always. They are fairly smart and can be loyal and can be good guard dogs and watch dogs. they have a bit of a deal with having their own identity. They want to rule the roost sometimes. In other words they want to be the boss and will challenge you for the dominant role. They have a tendency to live for themselves. Somewhat of a cat mentality. However they are most time very loyal to their master. My choice would be the ausie. Probably the second choice would be the boxer and then the Viszla. Only because I already have a hunting dog. to choose one I may lean to the Vizsla.
c_lou
So will just basic obedience training break the herding habit of an Aussie? I would think something so ingrained in there nature would be difficult to break.
wtnhunt
My moms neighbor has a australian shepard. He bites people after they turn there backs. You can't judge a hole breed because of one dog.I'm sure all would be great dogs.Depends how you raise them.I have 2 rotts and they are great family dogs.My step daughter is disabled and Whiskey and Gin are great with her.Best of luck on your decision. That is probably how the dog herds animals. I would think it is not uncommon with that type breed. Have watched cattle herding dogs bark until the animal they are attempting to herd turns, when the animal turns the dog goes at their heels to push them, hence the name "heelers". May not be the case with all of them, but seen more than a few that do this and would tend to think it is instinctive nature. Boxers from everything I have heard have pretty good temperaments, so do vizslas. For what you are wanting, may consider some other breeds like a lab. Of the three you mention, my first choice would be the vizsla then the boxer.
dartonman
I love the Visla's.......there are male black labs by me for sale for 250.00 they have 4 males left........our puppy is awesome....they are 8 weeks old...........Aussies are herders....if the child if any are present, they have a tendency to herd the kids....my buddy has a boxer...loves him to death...I just dont think he is the brightest crayon in the box......but I haven't been around alot of boxers........if the three are your choices....I vote Visla........let me know if you want a lab....the lady will hold him for you.. al

muggs
I'm with Texan, the Visla. Personally, and no offense to the boxer owners out there because I do think they're beautiful dogs, but I don't like them as a breed. I have a friend who's parents own two boxers, and he owns two himself. 3 of the 4 are complete hyper knuckleheads, the one is great though. But I don't like the 75% knucklehead rate. Growing up our neighbors had one and it would jump over their fence and run off on a weekly basis. The sheppard sounds like what you're looking for IMO. Just basing it off of what you'll be doing with it.
