New Mossberg 12 Gauges

Do you mean the new 535 pump gun? The 535 is basically a 500 with a 3.5" chamber. It does not have the huge .770" bore of the 835.

The 835 is not a new gun as it has been out for 16 years. It was the first 12 ga to handle the big 3.5" shells.

The 835 will throw some of the best patterns of any shotgun since it has the largest bore. I have one and it performs perfectly. I would not think of using anyother gun for waterfowl except the 935 which is a semi auto version of the 835. The drawback to the 935 is it does not reliably cycle field loads. For turkey, deer, and waterfowl, it should be just perfect. The 835 feels a little clunky, but if it fits you, it will shoot as well as any other gun.

Re: New Mossberg 12 Gauges

between the nova and the 835, i would have to say the Nova. Never shot one, but it just doesn't seem as bulky to me. I also really don't like the thumb safety on Mossbergs. The one right behind the trigger is much easier for me to operate.(could just be cuz thats what I'm use to) Pick whichever one feels the most comfortable to you.

I'm thinking about getting a 835 Synthetic with a 26" for upland/small game. I know it's probably an overkill, but its something I want. Definately want a 935 in Hardwoods Green HD for turkeys. grin.gif

So why is an 835 overkill for upland/small game? Its actually one of the best choices in a 12 ga. Most shotgunners do not realize what a pattern is actually like as it speeds towards the target. They see a 2 dimentional paper with holes in it showing where the pellets hit. This is fine and dandy for turkey hunting. For moving targets, its not even close. Patterns are 3 dimentional. Think of pattnrns like a cone shape. As the pellets in the center slow down from air resistance, they make their way to the outside and form the fringe of the pattern. The faster pellets in the center can divide the air resistance between them (like drafting in Nascar) and move faster.

What does all of this have to do with the 835? Well, the humongous bore size of the 835 allows the pellets to pass through the forcing cone and choke with less deformation and since the bore is bigger the shot charge is not compressed into as narrow of a passageway as a typical bore. This all reduces deformation and allows the pellets to stay rounder. This can reduce the length of the shot string as it speeds towards the pattern. There will always be some deformation so there will be pellet spread. When a moving target is shot at, the majority of the pellets do not connect. Th larger the bore the shorter the shot string is so the more pellets will be on target. The bigger the bore, the better the pattern is.

I have always said, if I were to buy another turkey/waterfowl gun, it would be the 935. No question about it. It has the benefits of the large bore and its gas operated to reduce recoil. Don't get much better than that.

So your saying a benelli nova with 3 assorted chokes brand spanking new for $339.00 is to much money?

I think you might edit that stament AJ..

[/ QUOTE ]

Nope, I would not edit that statement. It is too much money for a gun that can not be fitted to a shooter. Personally I would not own a Nova. To those that say it fits them just fine, I seriously doubt that you know what you are looking for in shotgun fit. I can take a youth model H&R Topper 12 ga and beat most hunters on the trap field, that does not mean it fits me. When you can run shot after shot and not miss (once you know how to wing shoot) the gun fits you. Just because you can shoulder the gun and line the bead up with a pop can does not mean the gun fits.

[ QUOTE ]

besides a savage or mossberg im not sure if you could even come close to buying a browning or weatherby or winchester for that price.. not where i live anyways..

[/ QUOTE ]

The Nova is not in the Weatherby or Browning's category. Again, for $400 I can get a lot better gun than the Nova. They are called the Rem 870, Win 1300, Mossberg 835, and others.
