GWSmith
Re: NY deer Hunters ? In the spirit of unity I would be happy to help you drag a deer during the archery season. Not all of us care to indulge in the competitions where you have nor do we feel the need to do so. Dont take too much for granted just because I'm not spouting off at the mouth here like you. I dont agree with what some organizations say either...but thats not what this post was about. You may very well be a better shot in archery than I am...you appear to spend alot of time at it and for the time spent I'm sure you expect yourself to shoot at a very high level. Personally as far as the seasons go....I hope that the DEC someday changes the entire state to start and finish on the same dates while keeeping the divisions clear among the different types of weapons used to hunt with. No...I dont want muzzleloaders shooting over my head while I put an hour long stalk on a deer(who still does not know I'm there). I think that explains itself and my position clearly. As far as the proposed changes as they are now I disagree with the DEC. I feel that to make accurate changes they need to be dealing with accurate facts...not GEUSSES!!! BTW...I have shot a turkey with my bow.... sorry about the quality of the picture....seems I have never spent much money on camera gear....just archery
Doc
Re: NY deer Hunters ? You know, there is one thing about this whole early muzzleloader season that is really starting to aggravate the heck out of me. Through no fault of my own, the DEC and/or the muzzleloaders have placed me in a position of opposing other hunters. I really don't like that situation, and whoever it was that started the ball rolling on this proposal has really done the hunting community a terrible dis-service. GWSmith
Re: NY deer Hunters ? Yeah ADK, That was with a Kolpin Twister....I had that broadhead rolling around in that gearbox I call a suitcase...figured I'd try it out No broadhead seems to work good, during an open field stalk, at 10 feet on the Turkeys though...dont know whats wrong there(probably a lack of hunting skills on my part). P.S. I know you have heard this before...LOL When you least expect it buddy....you'll get yours...LOL

NY911Bowhunter
Re: NY deer Hunters ? CTX - I have said many times before...... I do NOT want the first 2 weeks of October! Why would I want them? To get bitten by more ticks? To sweat through my new Under Armor and ScentBlocker suit? So my stand can be chock full of freaking spiders?? Heck NO!!!!!! I do not want the southern tier archery season changed at all! I hunt the October 1 opener up in the Adirondacks with some special people - one of whom is inviting you along - and I would not want to change that either! Dang man - whats your deal??? Where can I mail your NYP application to??
cutter10x
Re: NY deer Hunters ? october 1st...ill be there...........just tell me where..............my deal is........why............why do you not want a ML week included.........nothing else.......everything else i agree with.....i dont agree with the following reasons....safety, scaring the deer, give me a break.......there is something else ......and i think its just the NYB trying to justify there exsistence.......if the dec never proposed these changes then the NYB would be sitting there doing nothing...and i read there web site.....nice influx of new members since the proposals came out.......i sorry man...i just dont understand what the big deal is........it even says the NYB under legislative accomplishment has developed a working relationship with the DEC...ya sounds like it...........like i said.......im sorry i just dont but it.........i shoot 3d with hundreds of people from this state and pa....95% of them bowhunt and i would guess that 90% of those 95% do not belong to the NYB.......that shows me that your talking for a small group compared to the whole....... RangerClay
Re: NY deer Hunters ? One of the things that I have been telling others is that if you really want to hunt early ML come up north. There are literally bunches of farmers in Jefferson County with crop damage just begging for hunters to harvest deer. Our buck/doe ratio is all messed up. Why screw up the archery season in the southern tier? Just a thought Ranger

RangerClay
Re: NY deer Hunters ? ADK, The Chaumont area is really nice. That is where I harvested the doe with my .45 Yellowboy that I posted earlier. That day I saw 12 does before 9 am and most of them were 150+ pounders. If you really want to get in touch with farmers this what I did. I called the DEC's wildlife biologist for region 6, Jim Farquar at 315-785-2261. The last name is mis-spelled but it's pronounced "Far Quar". The last time I went to see him he gave the names of 8 farmers who complained of crop damage. I picked the one I that I liked and harvested a 160 pound doe that stepped in front of me when I was walking in the woods. I was done before 8am. If you are not shy about harvesting a big doe just give him a call. I will also be glad to point you towards the best areas like Pilliar Point. Also be sure to give me a call and let me know if you are in the area. We usually have a party on the deck to celebrate the first day of deer season on Saturday night. You are all welcome to have barley sodas and Jager with us. Ranger

You really don't have to get fancy to hunt here. A $45 motel room and a tank of gas is all you need. Then once get your deer you can go fishing for Salmon on the Salmon River and then go home. NYBUCK
Meeting at West Canada High School Well we had the meeting at the West Canada High School lat night. I will say I am a little disapointed at the turn-out. There were probably 60 - 70 people there. But I guess they had 450 at New Hartford the previous night so maybe a lot of local people may have attended that one. I grew up not five minutes from this high school and I only recognized a few that were there. A couple that I did see, kinda of ironic, but they are the biggest outlaws that I know. Anyway, the meeting went pretty much as I am hearing from all of the others. This guy Larry who started the meeting apperantly is the PR guy. He was the worst speaker that I have heard in a long time. Jim Farquar the deer biologist, was pretty good. But I felt he danced around a few issues when he either didn't have the answer or did not want to give the one the hunters wanted to hear. They took a vote and asked who wanted the ML season during the archery season and only one guy in the whole place supported it. one of the nicest things that happened that there were a few guys that work for the DEC and they stepped up and basically said they did not want this change to happen. This is pretty much what I am hearing from all the meetings. So I asked Jim if these meeting were going to have any impact on there decision. His response was a little scary. He told me that it basically was up to the "leaders" in Albany that feel it is time for a change in the current structure. I am not sure why and I am sure we will never know. On the way out I was talking to another guy that worked for the DEC and he stated that the archers have been pounding their legislative leaders and letters are piling in to the new comissioner. Apperantly there is a meeting coming up because they want to know what is going on and what should be done. So it looks like we have been heard, but keep sending those emails and letters. We can't let up now. I just can't imagine how the change allowing ML during archery season will ever fly, but who knows. Bottom line we are at the mercy of some pencil pushing desk sitting moron that probly doesn't even hunt.

NY911Bowhunter
Re: Meeting at West Canada High School CTX - let me stick my neck out here and contradict what I have been saying. I am adimantly against the EML season - however; - The ML will be DMP only. With the intended decrease in DMP's, there should not be a huge influx of hunters in the woods with their ML's. At least not enough to do MUCH harm. My biggest problem was with the shutting down of archery during the EMLS. Of course, they have changed that - but now we too are restricted to antlerless deer. If they allowed the bowhunters to shoot bucks and/or does, and the ML's were still restricted to the few DMP's issued, I would surly be more agreeable to the changes. However (again) - I am resilient to change because of the give an inch - take a mile attitude of today's world. Man - I just wish they would have left well enough alone! Guest Squirrelbuster
Re: Meeting at West Canada High School [ QUOTE ] We need the hunting age lowered to 14 to get these kids "hooked" before they get into other things. At least not enough to do MUCH harm. [/ QUOTE ] You are taking entirely too short range a view of all this. What the picture looks like today is absolutely no indication of what it will always be, but the muzzleloader season will be permanent. You are describing a condition that exists today and probably will exist for a couple more years. I'm sure that you are aware that the deer herd is not a static situation, especially after this year's harvest numbers. Perhaps in as little as 4 or 5 years, the situation could be completely reversed. You also are neglecting that the current sex restrictions on the muzzleloader season could disappear in an instant. What effect would this have on muzzleloader participation in that early season? You are also discounting the fact that this early season will have set the precedent of allowing firearms into the bow season. That is a big change that could have destructive effects on bowhunting in the future. No concessions! Doc
Doc
Re: Meeting at West Canada High School I have a question about all these age lowering proposals. I haven't read the exact wording of these proposals, so I'm not sure of the details, but if the ages are lowered, what conditions have they put on these lowered ages for parental or adult supervision? I think I have two different feelings about lowering ages for big game hunters, depending on that particular point. Doc

RangerClay
Re: NY deer Hunters ? As a teacher I am very much for the opening day on Saturday. I can't take the day off. There is a lot of pressure on kids not to hunt on Monday. When I was in high school I played basketball. One of my team members asked if he could miss practice to hunt opening day. My coach as how many more would like the day off and about 8 of us raised our hands. He reluctently let us go and the next Saturday we all sat the bench for the entire game We all remembered it the follwing year and only 2 or 3 made the sacrifice to go hunting. I believe you will get more than a 2% raise if you allow a Saturday opener. I don't have a lot of faith in Cornell. Just ask the kids at the Sherburne-Earlville school in Chenago County. The get the opening day off from school because so many kids, teachers and bus drivers take the day off. MHO Ranger
