Too bad you dont have full time ambulance service. Our chief wants me to get EMR certified since he's the only one we got now in our dept. Oh come now, why are you fire guys so afraid of commitment?:clown: J/K Nice to see someone else is losing some sleep too. EMS is hugely underappreciated yet called upon the most!! Congrats on your fortitude and stepping up to the challenge!!! Good Job:)
redkneck
Oh come now, why are you fire guys so afraid of commitment?:clown: J/K Maybe it was the page the other morning at 3 am that said something about rectal bleeding?........... You're right Tracy, it is hugely underappreciated, and I'd have to say I prob live in one of the more under-paged parts of the country, but I still hadn't decided to make the plunge! PotashRLS
Come on........you're a shoe-in!!!! I see you mentioned EMR. Are you guys fully transitioned to the new terminology? Like 1st Responder is now the EMR, EMT-Basic is now just EMT, EMT-IV Tech is now EMT Advanced and so on with Intermediates and Paramedics. You know, NIMS compliance:bang: Wisconsin is one of the leading states for EMS and has very aggressive field protocols for all levels of EMTs. Our EMT-Basics can do certain things in the field that only Paramedics can do in other states and have been for years. Unfortunately we have long refresher classes and have them quite often. But a person wouldn't do it if they didn't want to. Give it more thought. The longer you wait, the harder it will be to take the plunge! Just think of all the people you'll be able to help:clap:
redkneck
I guess we've transitioned, lol..... As far as I know we're all now required to take the national test at the end of training, but what accreditation, man dont get me to lying. I'll prob do that at some point, but right now there's even talk of having our vollies become state certified firemen. I've never even done that, and I'm quite sure that we have some good ppl that would do wonderful in class/testing but wouldn't do so well when it comes to the physical demands at the fire academy. HOYTnMUZZYboy
On my dept. you half to be atleast obtain your ff2 state cert within 2 years of being hired. Become a state cert. EMT-B within in three years. I'm finishing up my paramedic right now, and let me tell you. If your serious about the fireservice get everything you can now. It's just going to get harder as time goes by. With all the NIMS and NFPA stuff thats being put out now its going to be a pain to get all those certs. Its tough enough now. Good luck with your fireservice and EMS choices.

Good luck with your fireservice and EMS choices. Good advice...........it will only get harder. The problem is that there is very little difference in training and requirements for these services in regard to paid vs. volunteer. The advantage you have is that you are on a paid department. The Volunteer Departments still have to take the same training and recerts and licensing regardless, or at least up here we do. It makes it hard when it is not the job that pays the bills. It actually takes up so much time that it eliminates the possibility of getting a part-time job to help make ends meet. It probably won't be too long before Wisconsin EMT-Basics could be doing IVs in the field. That is getting very agressive for volunteer departments, yet great for patient care. :stretcher: Times are changing very fast!!!!
