camoman1
Does anybody else have a window on their house that is like a bird magnet?? Seem just about everyday I hear that *Thud* on one particular window......and I often find the little feathered guys laying under it when I mow the lawn. Alisha
Unfortunately yes. At my parents house in West Virginia, there is a big sliding glass door at the back of the house that the birds run into all the time. We tried putting decals, pictures, etc., on the glass but it didn't seem to help. I couldn't believe how many pine siskins we had kill or stun themselves on those doors this past winter/spring. My guess would be around 50 or more. :stretcher:
Tominator
We've had a few do kamikaze numbers on our house. If you can see clear through your house through windows, the birds think they can fly through that. Sometimes drawing the curtains or putting the shades down helps. Doe-ee
We also had a lot of siskins hitting the window.(and towhees, mountain thrush and a few other sparrows too) This spring it was happening nearly every day. We have windows on three sides of the porch and we figured too that they are looking through 2 corner windows and think they can fly right through. They do hit another window a lot in the living room and there I think the problem is that they see a reflection of a tree outside. We've put up some dangly things in the porch windows and haven't had one "accident" since. We keep the living room shade partway down now with the heat so that reduces the reflection there. It kinda makes us have second thoughts about putting up too many bird feeders.
Jorden
We dont have any birds that try to fly through the window but we do have this one bird who will just sit on the window ledge or hover and peck at the window, trying to get in. He even tries to get into the car. I was sitting outside in my car, about to go to work, when he started pecking at the window...quite odd. Doe-ee
Do you remember Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds"??
Deb
We usually have 3 or 4 feeders going, but this summer we have only one and that has cut down on the mad dashes the birds make from the hawk that hangs out nearby. We had a dove fly away so fast that when it hit our window, it left a ghosty-like shadow of dust/body dander(???) on the window. We could see the outline of its wings, beak, head....:stretcher: We've also had cardinals shadow boxing, too.

Birds attack or peck on windows or any other shiny surface because they see their own reflection. They do this thinking it's another bird competing for a mate or territory. I guess they don't call them bird brains for nothin.
backwoods07
I feel like my house is gettin dive bombed every morning pretty much! They even leave their little imprints on the glass they smack it so hard. Most of them get knocked out for a little bit then get back to flying, but some aren't as fortunate. PotashRLS
Put out an Owl decoy :bat:and see if they stay away. Of course that defeats the purpose of having feeders though.
