Question for the college grads. and current college students. Was there any point while you were in school that you started thinking that maybe the major you chose, wasn't what you really wanted to do? If so, how did you decide between them??

I am at that point right now and it is really stressing me out.:hammer1: I have been in school for about a year and a half, so I'm not that far into my current program since I only go part time, but I am beginning to think that I really don't want to do this. Although I like what goes into it, I have in my mind that there are a couple of other options I could choose that would be a bit more interesting to me. :helpsmilie:

I looked at what was going on in the world as far as technology adn what was coming up in the future so I went towards computing and it proved to be a great career for me. Went from starting out at 36K to 75K in five years time but I worked very hard and volunteered for extra training and really put myself out there.

Most of what happens to your future depends on you.

Sacrifice and risk and hope for the pay-off.

hey, not to worry. all you really have to learn is one short sentence.

"would you like fries with that"

j/k. this is your life. give it some real serious thought. then, go into something you really enjoy. if you enjoy your work, you'll love life. if your job is a drag, life will drag on.

Thanks Steve, but I am more of a "Welcome to Wal-mart" guy...to advanced for me?:clown:

Yeah, I am thinking really hard about it. I am comparing pay scales and advancement and the future of those jobs as far as which will have more employment opportunities. Right now I am in an Accounting program, the two I have on my mind are computer programming, and surgical tech. Right now I am leaning toward surgical tech.

Went to college for something I liked and graduated, but the jobs I'd like aren't there. I'm working at a job that requires a degree like I have (but not what I'd like to be doing), but I don't like it. Would like to go back to school for something that I could get a better job in and that I might like, but don't have the money or time to go back. So right now, I'm kinda stuck in a job I hate going to everyday.

Appalachian State University Grad.

Business Management was my major.

Had 10 hours to go before graduation and I decided that business management was not for me. So I swtiched majors to Industrial Drafting and Design. It set me back two years and about $20,000 but I went from making straight C's and skipping class to making straight A's and spending the night in my design studio because I was having so much fun and didnt want to go home. If you are not happy or feel that you wont to change DO IT!!!! With the career I have now as a Nuclear Designer I could not imagine working in Business.

I spent 6.5 years in undergrad, :clown:

Dont get me wrong, I started college off not for the schooling but for the experience and lived a very wild and crazy life up until I changed majors and got into something that I had a desire to do. I still had fun and did the college life thing as well but no matter what I was in class the next morning at 8am because I wanted to be there.

If you want to talk about more of this college thing and have questions, PM me. I had fun in school, did a major that I hated, had half a semester to go before I was done with school forever and then changed which set me back 2.5 years. Do I regret not finishing in 4, Heck no!! Would I do it the same way if I could go back, Heck yeah!!! It was one heck of a learning experience that I will have with me for the rest of my life.

Goodluck and follow your heart and gut, Dont worry about what other people expect of you. I went to college because it was the next step, not because I wanted. But once I was there and found something that I wanted to do, it was on!

not proof reading that, sorry for spelling mistakes if any:clown:

I hated that part of college, proof reading

I learned the hard way..... i went for general business which is alright but it is kind of generic. If you are in business go for finance or ACCOUNTING. It will help you a LOT in the long run. But on the other hand I knew a lady with a history degree who had the same job I do and I work in reimbursement in hospital. Most of the time unless you are really specialized the degree just gets you through the scrubber program to get into the interview.

dont stress over it to much bud. I am goin into my senior year of college and i have changed majors 3 times already. Freshman year i was majoring in Biology, sophmore year i decided to just get my associates of science degree, this last year(junior) year i changed my major to Communicative Sciences and Disorders (speech therapy). Im sure you will change your mind more than just once or twice. thats all part of college these days. I could probably count on one hand, the number of people my age that decided on a major in highschool and stuck with it till graduating.

Same thing happened to me after a my first 2 years of pre-med at SIU Carbondale. My family always told me to be a physician so I just always figured I'd go that route. After 2 years of college I didn't know what I wanted to do but didn't want to be a physician and also wasn't to crazy about another 6 years (min) of school and associated costs that I was paying for.

I spoke with an advisor and she recommended that I complete a computer program that is designed to help you figure out what you want to do with your life. As I recall it took about 6 hours to complete and at the time thought it was a waste of time. Anyway, I completed it by answering a ton of questions. At the end it gave me a print-out of ranked careers that matched my profile.

Number one was a teacher. I looked at the printed national salary and that amount was too low so I said forget that one.

I believe number 2 was a fireman and somewhere around number 10 was a registered nurse. The salary was better than that of a teacher, my pre-med courses would fit the program, and I'd be out of school in just 2 more years. Anyway, I went with it.

After graduation I worked as a nurse. I remember my manager doing my evaluation and reading several letters that mentioned my name that patients had sent her about their stay. The thing that kept coming up was how much they appriciated my ability to teach them how to take their medications, or how to change their wound dressing, or whatever. It was then that I remembered that computer program and my number one career. I appplied to graduate school right after that evaluation and have never looked back.

I've been teaching nursing for 10 years now and can honestly say I love my job.

Wish I could remember the name of that computer program, but I'm sure the advisors at your college would have something like it.

Yup! I switched majors three times in college. I applied into Poli Sci, then switched to Urban Planning my soph year, then back to Poli Sci my junior year. I just finished school last year and was fortunate to graduate in 4 years. I went to U of I in Champaign, and it seems they do everything they can to keep you there as long as possible.

It's hard deciding what you want to do for the rest of your life when you're 18. I LOVED urban planning and hated political science, but I would've had to stay an extra semester to finsh my urban planning degree. So, that's what made my mind up. I minored in Urban Planning.

Illinois State University Senior here..... Man, I never felt like that, but if you really feel that your current major isn't what you want to do, then you should switch. You can't go through life, or your college career doing something that you don't like. You will regret not switching , again, if you feel that this is something that you really want. You have to enjoy your career, and you want to be able to wake up and say "I want to go to work today." I would say that if this is something truly in your heart, change your major. This is JMO, but I would say the extra time in school would be worth it, if it means you being able to do something you enjoy.
