92xj
For the folks who have flown with rifles and shotguns, What is the proper way to do this? For Christmas I will be flying back home to South Carolina and am planning on getting into my woodduck honey hole two mornings and going to the hunt club to sit in my tree stand at least once. I will be flying with my 12ga and my 270. How do I go about doing this? I know I should call the airlines and see what they say but I figure some people here do it fairly often so personal experience and tips would be great. Is there any insurance you can get on the guns during travel? I would be serverely pissed if something happens to the guns and they do not show up like what happens with bags sometimes. Anyhow, learn me the ropes of flying with guns.
KirkV
Most airline want them in a metal lockable container, you will have to show the weapon is unloaded before they allow you to lock it and pass it as luggage. But you are spot on with contact your airline first and verify what they want. Really not too bad! Kirk
m gardner
Call the airline and ask them what to do. Longguns usually are no problem. Make sure the city you are flying into has no weird gun laws you may violate (like New York City). Generally all you do is go to the counter with your lockable case and they look at it and you sign a paper put it into the case and when you get to your destination you will most likely find it isn't on the carosel and you will be paged to pick it up personally. Ammo has to be in a separate locked container and you can take no more than 11 pounds I believe. Mark
DocMort
I just flew with Delta, I put a Savage American Classic, and Rem Model 7 in the same case to them to the counter they checked for gun powder residue then had me sign a sheet of paper and lock them. They were on the carousel no issues at all. Josh
stevebeilgard
each air line is quite different, so call the one you're flying on and see what they say. get the name of the person you're talking with, and her employee number. save that information in case trouble arises later. rookieee
you are going to need to have a metal case for your rifles, also two TSA locks,if you are taking your ammo it must be in its original manufacture box, also you will sign a declaration form, you will be ask to stay with your weapon until TSA check it,get there early sometimes it could take 1/2 hour or longer for them to do this
Adjam5
Spend the $$$ on a good gun case like a SKB or some other heavy duty case. It is worth it when you pick up your gun, shoot it and it is still on zero. Handlers can be brutes. Go to the TSA website for details. I flew with guns out of NYC with no issues, and ammo was no problem as long as the gun wasn't loaded and the ammo was in its factory carton/box. The ammo was allowed to be locked with the gun. When claiming the guns a separate hand off needs to happen with it than with regular luggage.
