hair raising events

I've had quite a few hair raising experiences, mostly with blackbears, (not counting the one with a blacktail buck coming at me ;))

One time, as I was settling in for a deer hunt, I walk past a little open field, just before ducking in off the field mybe 20 yrds or so, to sit on a ridge, over looking some swamp beside a river. I still hunted my way in there, and saw nothing in the field as I stepped in and settled down on my stool. I put my bow down in front of me, to get my facemask out. Just as I let go of my bow, I caught a movement to my left out of the corner of my eye. I turned slowly to see a bear walking in at me, only about 10 yrds away. My heart was in my throat but I quickly reached for my bow as I yelled out "Get outa here".

Well the bear scrambled alright. He scramble straight up a tree right beside me, stopped about 15 ft up, looked down at me and started woofing, barking and drooling.

Well, I just slowly got up, grabbed my stool, and slowly backed out of there leaving that snarling, frothing critter hanging there in the tree. I didn't take my eyes off him for a second. I moved down another 100 yards and set up there instead. Never saw him again that day.

Another time, I was walking in the same area (same small piece of private property I hunt) before hunting season, doing some still-hunt scouting, without a weapon, and no bear spray. I slowly walked out into a little opening where the deer hang out and cross all the time and to my surprise, there standing about 25 yrds away is nice blackbear eating grass. He looked up about the same time I spotted him, and we both froze. (my heart was ok at this point). Then he woofed at me and barked. I put one foot behind me and was about to slowly back out the same way I came, but he had different ideas.

All of a sudden he runs at me, full tilt for about 4 or 5 bounds, then plants both front feet at the same time, and comences to woof and drool. That is what you call a false charge or a first charge (to test me). That's when my heart migrated to my throat in one fast swoop.;)

I, For some reason, knew instantly what I had to do, so I raised my arms above my head, and ran at him about 3 leaps, (which put us a close quarters) Yelling as loud as I could, jumped in the air at my last stride, and planted both of my feet firmly. Then with arms still raised, I yelled again, and was releaved when he turned tail and ran into the bush.

He stopped just inside the bush and woofed at me a few more times, but I wasn't sticking around for an encore. I backed out as quick as I could, and vamoosed back out toward the truck ..LOL

Then there was my first run-in with a big blackbear, about 31 years ago, shortly after moving here to the island. I was hunting up in the mountains where an old logging slash bordered a revine with a creek in it. along the edge of the logging slash was a burned out bushline, with big old standing black burned trees, where the logging slash burn had gotten carried away for a bit when the loggers had burned the slash.

I thought since it was early morning, I'd go back into the burned bush a bit, because the visibility was great, and catch any deer coming in off the slash.

Well, it was a nice sunny hot september morning, and after seeing nothing for a few hours, I leaned my 30/30 up against the tree I was sitting under, and put my head back for a short nap.

I must have dozed off quick, and was awakened by I'm not sure. I opened my eyes to see, not 15 feet in front of me, a huge blackbear walking away from me. :jaw:As I reached for my rifle, he turned his head, GRUNTED, and kept walking away.

Now to this day, I'm not sure how close he was to me as I slept. He was coming up from the creek, which was behind me, and was now in front of me. :jaw: Did he sniff me?, did he lick my face? or did he just saunter past me not noticing me?

:confused::wacko::rolleyes:

I wish I knew. All I do know is I'm glad he wasn't hungry or perturbed...LOL

I havnt had anyhting really bad but this spring while turkey hunting I had a very big black snake nearly crawl across my legs. I dont do snakes at all...so that was a scary event i guess.

LOL. Snakes don't usually bother me too terribly much so long as I see em before I get too close. Have had snake skins on ladder stands before climbing up, the bad snakes we have here don't typically climb. Laying on the ground during turkey season this year, had a rat snake climb up between two trees about 2 yards away from me.

One of the scariest experiences was probably getting lost in the bottom after dark with heavy rains moving in in the forecast, have posted on that a few times before. Next to that would probably be when I had a yote and a dog charge at me during turkey season two seasons ago, pretty crazy and sure got my adrenaline going.

Have had a few hair raising sounds I have heard over the years, screams that sounded like something getting got that were indescribable. Have heard yotes too many times to count, some extremely close, can be kind of unnerving during the archery season. Have heard growls that I never did see what it was that was growling too.

The biggest one that comes to mind was while bowhunting over a small food plot years ago. It was a cold afternoon, and the moon was super bright. I didnt see one deer and finally I took my arrow off the string and put it in the quiver and just sat on the stand to wait for a friend that was hunting with me that would be walking up the trail soon. I saw an owl pitch up into a big old red oak tree. I watched him for a minute or two then just continued to look around the food plot, waiting to see my buddy's flashlight. I reached up to scratch my chest with my right hand (i'm still in full camo and headnet) and the owl caught the motion and pitched out and made a line straight toward me. I didnt notice him (they dont make a sound) until he was on top of me. He drilled me in the chest with both claws, turned and swooped down and away and never made a sound. If it werent for the cold and my coveralls, I would have been stuck bad! I think by butt actually pinched a hole in the seat I was on.

I had 1 black bear experience that got me pretty excited. It was the first weekend of our gun hunting season about 5 years ago. We were hunting on a friends land, Sunday afternoon. I found a nice blown down tree that I decided to sit against. I had been sitting for about 20 minutes, when I look behind me and see a black bear sauntering up the trail about 20 yards from me. I stood up to get behind the blow down and he turned and took off. While I had a full shotgun and a pocket full of shells, I am glad I didn't have to use them.

I got stuck in a hydraulic below a low water dam that I had just ran in a kayak. It sucked me and the boat under, turned me about 2 flips as it pulled me back up under the washed out portion of the dam, finally spit me out and then sucked me back under again. This went on for about 2 minutes before I was finally able to push off from the base of the dam with my paddle and shoot out far enough to clear the suction.

Another time I was walking through a field dove hunting when I just happened to look down and saw a coiled rattlesnake about a foot from me. I jumped forward and as I did I saw the snake strike through the air at the spot I had just been standing. Missed me by inches. That's when I decided to invest in some snake boots.

I've also been shot, but for some reason I didn't find that very scary??? Go figure...

ive had some pretty scary encounters with grizzly bears around my home town. First one was about 4 or 5 years ago on a back country elk trip. We killed a couple elk on a bench about 500 yards from our camp and one was gut shot so we washed the quarters off in the creek next to camp. That night we had a sow and 3 cubs surrounding our camp. They didnt do anything though. Next one was when my youngest brother who was about 10 or 11 years old at the time and i were bow hunting for elk in an area that has alot of grizzly bears. We spotted a bull and a few cows about 2 miles from the truck and we headed off after them. We had to walk around a huge patch of aspen trees to get to the elk. On the edge of the aspens there was a little creek coming out and a gap about 10 yards wide between the aspens and the bushes down stream. We were bein quite to keep from spooking the elk and walked through that gap. We ended up spooking the elk and headed back to the truck the same way we came. As we walked up to the gap again a 500 or 600 lb grizzly ran out of that bush that we had just walked by at 5 yards! He ran towards our truck but we never saw him again. I had pistol in hand all the way back to the truck. My brother has also had a sow and 2 cubs standing at the bottom of his ladder stand looking up at him the morning after i made a perfect shot on a doe and she didnt leave a blood trail. we were goin to go back and look for her but called the game warden after the bear incident and he said that the bear most likely found my doe already so to just leave it be. Also had a sow with a cub come out 100 yards from me this last season during bow season between me and my truck while i was still in my stand. Instead of risking it and walking back to the truck i whipped out my cell phone and called my dad to come pick me up. He drove right up to the bottom of my stand and we never saw here again.

I havent had realy any bad experiences while out in the woods or on stand that I can remember. One I can recall is a time I was going hunting one morning and had driven the half a mile up the logging road to where I was going to park my truck.Ii was about an hour before daylight and I was out of my truck getting my things together when all of a sudden I heard the worst scream I had ever heard in my life come from the exact area I was planning on going to.The hair raised on my neck and I got back in my truck and waited for daylight before going to my stand.I think it was a bobcat, but we have never seen one down there in over 24 years of hunting.Another time would be during turkey season when I just about stepped on a copperhead,I almost put my foot down right on top of him when I seen him under my foot.I went and bought some snake boots the following season.

Only one that comes to mind that was a little scary was about 5 years ago when I was partridge hunting on Gran's property, I knew that bears had been around. My uncle always throws the compost in the area from the resort but it was past the time that was open. I was walking along one of the trails and look over and there's a black bear sitting on his rump about 15 yards off the path eating some left over compost, he spotted me as I spotted him. I figured he'd run off right away but he just kept staring at me. I had dad's Remington 1100 20ga, started to get a little eerie so I fired a shot in the air, the bear didn't even flinch and kept staring at me. I loaded another one into the gun he stood up. I pointed it right between his eyes, if he would have taken a step towards me he would have got 3 loads of birdshot in the face. He slowly walked away and kept looking back, I waited til he was out of sight before I continued on.

Had fox try and steal my fly down turkey wing out of my hand one morning.

I was doing some tree calling and had just used the wing to 'fly down'. I had it in my hand still at my side, I heard something REAL close to me, I turned to see a fox running at me. Well he realized something was up and turned away about 2ft from me and went runnin off through the woods.

the only time i can recall was when i was about 19 me, my dad and brothers were squirrel hunting in the river bottom, seen all kinds of snakes and knew they were around, it was getting dark but could still see the tops of the trees, as i sat there i began to hear something on the ground in front of me moving slowly towards me i tried to figure just when in front me it was, i had a pump 12 gage shotgun, when it picked up speed coming toarwds, i got to my knees and fired a shot directly to the ground in front of me, than i finley got to my feet and fired the remaning 2 shots, i heard something floping ing the leaves, shacking a got my flash light out of my pack and shined it to see a had just killed a big timber rattler.

i got on some shale while stone sheep hunting. i was headed down fast, and abou to go over a 500' cliff when i saw an arm reaching out of a bush a hundred yards down and a few yards to my right. i used the stock of a beautiful german 300 weatherby as a rudder and made it to my buddy. he literally saved my life by less than 5 yards.
