Indiana Deer Hunting

Just a short hello from a new member- I'm doing some ground work for a deer hunt in Indiana. My wife has family friends up there in Gosport.

How hard is it to land a place to hunt?

Most ground is spoken for. There is public ground to hunt, just go deeper than everyone else. Best of luck to ya.

Hi and welcome! This is a great community, you'll fit right in I'm sure.

I would work those "family friends" if I were you. I'm originally from California where I initially took the hunters safety course and all that. I remember putting into action the advice they gave you in the videos about stopping by farms or country homes, knocking on the door and introducing yourself and then asking for permission to hunt or possibly trade some work for hunting or whatever. Needless to say, it is not only awkward and intimidating in todays world for the land owner...but It's also a good way to get shot or get the cops called on you...just for stopping by and asking! LOL!

However, out here in the Midwest farmers and landowners are #1 way more friendly and #2 more favorable towards hunting...."in general" in my experience. But I have found it's still very difficult to get in the door as a total stranger. But, I have had tons of invites from friends, friends friends and acquaintances of friends friends! If you can work any of those "family friends" and they can in turn check with friends from their churches and whatever else, I bet you land a private property, which is the best option.

welcome to RT , i was born in Illinois but moved to Indiana a few years a go . no place to hunt but public grounds , I started hunting a shooting preserve 2 years a go , I was talking to the owner one day and he was talking about a few projects and i offered to help and now we are good friends and i have a place close to home to hunt at now . I still pay for my birds but every thing else i just need to ask him or let him know that some one is out there .

good luck

If you have trouble finding private ground to hunt at first, it looks like Gosport is within a decent driving distance of some very nice public ground (Morgan-Monroe State Forest). There are some great bucks taken in that area of the state. Also a little farther to the south is a lot of Hoosier National Forest ground around Monroe Reservoir.
