Ethan Givan
I was wondering if you guys sharpen your broadhead blades or if you just buy replacement blades. If you do sharpen them yourself how do you go about it. Im asking because the blades on my Thunderheads arent as sharp as I would like, even the new ones. They are sharp enough to cut easily but I want to be able to shave with them. It might not be necessary to have them that sharp but I like sharp heads. Any tips? ruttinbuc
I use a little Smith's hand held sharpening tool you can find at Cabelas. Just remember to push the broad head away from you. You will get the argument from me that the heads shouldn't be super razor sharp. http://smithsedge.com/products/product.asp?id=29&cid=10 Edited August 5, 2009 by ruttinbuc
Ethan Givan
So whats wrong with super sharp blades? It seems to me that a sharp head would get more pentration and pass through the deer easier.

A little rip and tear goes a long way on those less than perfect shots. Penetration has more to do with the tip of the arrow and kinetic energy. I have read and tend to believe that super sharp blades in combination with vanes zipping through game actually helps in closing the wound. Razor sharp is one thing, super is another. Ethan Givan
Well I like my blades sharp enough to shave the hair on my arm. I also smooth and sharpen the point of my broadhead. I like pass throughs But I guess they are sharp enough to get the job done when I get them new.
Gator
I'll take a razor sharp head over a somewhat sharp one any day of the week. Proven fact a "slice" is harder to stop bleeding than a tear, hence the reason for a sharp blade

My point is a lot of people are way too anal about getting the most extreme sharpness on a broadhead. There really is no reason to be. olsplittoe
Store bought sharp is good enough for me, it works well if you put it in the pump station.
