ParrotHead
The United States Senate finally passed a useful piece of legislation yesterday. It's called The Class Action Fairness Act, and it passed 72-26. The democrats had filibustered it in the last Congress. Not so now, with most of the democrats put out to pasture in the last election. So what's this about? Mainly it has to do with class action lawsuits. You know, the ones where you get a letter in the mail from an attorney telling you that you're part of a lawsuit over a can opener you bought 15 years ago. The lawsuit is filed in some small, lawsuit-friendly county in Illinois somewhere, and in the end the lawyers make tens of millions of dollars and you get a coupon good for $10 off a new can opener. What a deal, huh? You make lawyers rich and get ten bucks for your trouble. This new law would require large class-action lawsuits to be bumped up to federal court, eliminating the jurisdiction shopping that goes on and it also reduces the amount of money the ambulance chasers can skim off the top. Naturally, the trial lawyers were none too happy about this.
Texan_Til_I_Die
Re: Finally – something useful I heard about this bill passing. Definitely a step in the right direction. I was once solicited to be part of a class action suite against the manufacturer of an oil additive. I had always liked their product so I refused to participate. I also sent the defendants a letter stating my favorable opinions of their product.

stevebeilgard
Re: Finally – something useful the u.s. has 92% of the attorneys in the WORLD. hope this sets them back a notch, and helps our corporations out. you know, those big corporations that make guns, that keep us healthy, and that have made those insidious profits during the 20th century by inventing the top 100 useful inventions in the world. you know, those demogogues who actually made money on inventions like medecine, airplanes, phones, dialasys machines, combines, cars. well, like i said, the top 100 plus inventions of the 20th century, as voted on by most of the nations of the world. The only people they help out is themselves not to mention the cost to the rest of us in increased costs for goods and services from the companies that they screw.
