Looking for my first...

I am in the market for my first hand gun. I am not quite sure what to get. I am mainly looking for a gun that is fun to target shoot and blow up pumpkins at the farm. However, I would like one that if God forbid I ever have to defend my home, it would work efficiently.

Give me some information please.

Thanks

I like my SA-XD in 45acp and my Ruger P-95 in 9mm. They are fun to shoot but the 9mm is cheaper on the wallet. I agree with checking out to see what fits/feels good to you. I also have two Ruger revolvers in .41mag and .44mag but they are way too big for home defense unless that was all I could get to. You have to worry about shooting through walls when talking about home defense. That is why so many defense instructors like shotguns for using in your home.

For defense I love my SIGs. I've had no malfunctions. My brother is in love with Glocks. The Glock doesn't fit my hand well and doesn't point well or I'd love them too. I've got an XD-m and my hands are large enough that my thumb hits the slide release occasionally causing the slide to lock open at inopportune moments. I came in second this past week (beat by .01 second) because it happened three times during competition. If I use it for defense I'll need to bob it off. Besides that it's one heck of a pistol.

Handle and shoot as many pistols and revolvers as possible before you make your choice. See what fits you. Get a 22 conversion for practice if you can.

Like the others have said, handle lots of guns. I really like the feel of the taurus Mellinium, but got a great deal on a Glock and like the feel of it even better. The beretta Neos is a great little plinking gun, points well and has had "0" ftf after thousands of rounds, but it is a 22lr.

May want to think about a 38 or 357 snubby.

I would suggest a double action 4" revolver- in .357. It shoots .38's which are a breeze to reload and can be toned down in power, but it can shoot full power .357 and plant a bad guy or a good deer. A very versatile weapon. Go with a good Ruger or Smith, maybe a Taurus. REvolver=REliable. For a first handgun, that's where i would go.

Good idea. You'll wear out before you'll wear the Ruger out.

While you're looking for that first hand gun, check on some ear plugs or muffs and a shooting glasses. Ear plugs are fairly cheap and glasses about as such.

One thing about ear plugs/hearing protection; I bought several .357 and .44 mags just because the original owner didn't have hearing protection - more often than not, with the .44 mags., I even got the box of shells they bought with the gun (maybe 6 rounds shot). They didn't know the roar was worse than the bite and got rid of the guns pretty quick.

Unfortunately Wisconsin is not a CC state...yet.

I have been trying out a few different guns. I think I love the Springfield XD S&W.40. It just feels so good in my hand. Althought the new Glock grip feels pretty good as well. I am going this afternoon to do some more hands on research.
