Heavy Metal
Looking to see if any of you have or shoot this gun. I'm in the market for a new muzzleloader. It's only 169$. Also, What sabots and powder pellets work's best. Thanks. I bought my CVA Wolf almost 4 years ago from Cabelas. It came with a Pine Ridge Scope for like $130! It's all I've hunted with through both shotgun and MZL seasons until this year and I love it. Great gun. I'm still searching however for the right combination of sabot/jacket. All the boxes of TC sabots that come with there own jacket are super tight. I need to by some separate after market jackets and experiment to find a better fit. I shot 100 grain (2 x 50 grain cubes) for the first two years. After a ton of misfires I switched to loose powder and backed off to 90 grains...some times 100 and have yet to have a misfire through two seasons. I'd recommend not using pellets. Buck~Nasty
I'm also looking at the Optima. Any one tell the difference in there two?
jesse8953
optima has a longer barrel and the stock has a different feel.Like it is longer but never put the two side by side to see. Both shoot good.
wtnhunt
Don't know about that gun, but with any new ml'er you really should try to work up your loads to see what works best for your setup.

I'm thinking yes, but I'm not totally sure. I don't remember my Wolf being able to handle mag loads and I think the Optima does. SPEAK UP AND TELL US MAN!! jesse8953
Optima does shoot magnum loads. My old optima pro didn't have a very accurate shot with magnun loads. The wolf is a lighter gun to carry but a heavier gun usually don't kick as hard.I think the optima pro had a 28 inch barrel and was fluted.CVA makes a good gun but I love my T/C omega. jesse8953
GOOD GRIEF!?! Poor things didn't know what hit 'em!?!! 1st deer droped in its tracks [9 yards] and the 2nd one[4 yards] ran about 20 yards into a thicket then fell over.It had no exit hole. You could put a pop can in the entrance hole.Looked like a canon hit it. 245gr. hollow point powerbelt with 100gr. of pyrodex.Everyone who saw the hole had the same comment. "WOW!"
GWSmith
The Wolf is my ML and it works just fine. I bought mine as a package deal with everything included for just over $200 if I'm remembering right at Gander Mountain. I did extensive testing! In the rifle I own the Powerbelts were not consistent on paper from a rest. I found great accuracy IMO (sub 1" @ 100yds) from TC's Cheap Shot Sabots 240gr hollow point w/ mag express sabot. I also found that even though the rifle is rated for 150gr load that in my opinion it's a waste of powder. I shot through a chrono while working up loads and found that after 120gr there was no increase in speed. I'm just going on the information that I gained but I believe that it's because of the barrells length, the type of powder I was using(loose 2f goex), and the lack of ability for that powder to completely burn after the 120gr amount that I received these results. I reccomend that if you buy this rifle that you work up a load that your individual rifle likes and you'll be very happy with it. Is it the most popular on the market today...no. Does it work as it's designed to do...Dead deer dont lie;) Edited August 12, 2009 by GWSmith
Jeramie
There is nothing wrong with a wolf. I shoot an Optima but picked up a Wolf for a buddy that wanted to hunt with me. I ended up using it on occasion. I killed doe with it and she was just as dead as any other deer ive killed. I was using the cheap TC sabots you get at Walmart, Remington Clean Bore Primers, and 100grn of loose pyrodex. That is the exact setup I use in my Optima. 125yds or less, and its game over. MarineBwhnter
Nothing wong with the Wolf. I bought one for my son and one for my wife. They are smaller and lighter, better suited for smaller framed hunters. They both shoot 245 gr powerbelt aero tips and 90 gr (wife) 100 gr (son) powder (loose). They are very accurate and easy to shoot. By the way, the optima pro has a 29 inch fluted barrell. Awesome ML to shoot also!
Adjam5
I too have and shoot the Wolf. Paid $135 about 3 or 4 years ago. Put a $100 Bushnell 2-7X40 on it with T/C Gorilla grip rings. The 2 deer I have shot with it have not gone beyond 30 yards. I find that 2 pellets of 777 with 777 primers too and a 295gr powerbelt give me my best accuracy at 100 yards. I like the short barrel for walking NY's woods. The ramrod is a bit flimsy, so be careful when charging and seating the bullets. The no nonsense black I like and the pistol grip feels good in my hands. For the money I think you can't go wrong.
Heavy Metal
The ramrod is a bit flimsy, so be careful when charging and seating the bullets. Totally forgot I replaced mine after breaking it only the second season I used the gun. The stock rod is a telescoping deal that can lengthen and it didn't last long. Now I have a one piece aluminum fixed length. Just a generic ramrod I picked up at Walmart a couple years ago.
GWSmith
Just screw the front end all the way in and leave it there...much easier to deal with. I cant remember where I got this little extension but the other end of the ramrod is threaded and accepts it perfectly. It adds just the right amount of length and fits nice in the possibles bag;)

It is actually the "T" handle when you slide it through the breach plug socket that also came with the Wolf. I use it on my replacement ram rod as well as it's not quite long enough! GWSmith
That's right...It did come with the black socket. Why is it not long enough??? That black mark on the left of the ramrod in the last pic is approximately where the ramrod meets the crown of the barrell when my ML is loaded. Oh OK the replacement ramrod is not long enough as well...got ya;)
