shedhunternick
I saw a very good buck 150-160" bedded in a bean field with 2 other small bucks yesterday. My question is now that i have seen him how do i get him? We set up a trail cam next to the field to see if i can get some shots of him. Will he probably be using the same food sourcre during early october or will he probably have moved out by then? This timber has ridges and bluffs in it so would setting up the cam between the 2 ridges heading toward the food source be a good idea? redkneck
Best to stay as far back as possible to observe the animal. He will most likely keep a similar feeding pattern till the beans are harvested anyway. Try to get an understanding of the deer's movement without intruding, by glassing the field from a distance. You'll eventually narrow his path down I think.
layin on the smackdown
The only reason he will move is if he is bumped. That should be his core area, his turf, so unless you or someone else keeps disturbing his area, he should hang around. The difference between now and october is that he will be very nocternal come october, most of his activity that you will able to see will be at first and last light. Try hanging your cam in one spot, let it sit there for about two weeks or so, if you don't get what you want, try another area. Good luck, and be sure to post some pics of that stud! shedhunternick
Thanks for the advice, the area isn't hunted very hard so hunting pressure isnt too bad. I've read that bucks will switch core areas during early fall? Is this true? Once i get the cams here in a couple weeks ill post some pics. I'd stick a cam right in the middle of the bean field, put it on a tripod or a post. Wear rubber boots to mask your scent. Like Danny said, leave the cam up for two weeks or more. Check it out, if you don't get any pics, I'd move a little bit closer to the timber. Find a trail and put it close to the trail. It's usually a result of them following the does and the food. As long as the does and/or food are still there, he should stick around. Good luck, sounds like you've spotted a dandy!
