DocMort
We took some rifles to the range today looking to get everything sighted in for Colorado in October. Savage Model 14 American Classic 325 WSM- Shooting 200 grain nosler shot a 3 shot clover leaf at 100 yards. Rem Model 7 XCR 300 WSM- Shooting 180 Grain Interlock 3 shot 3/4" at 100 Savage 111 I think 7mm Rem Mag - Shooting 175 Partition just under an inch. TC Encore 300 Win- 180 Interlock shoots pretty much same hole. BLR Takedown 450 Marlin- 325 LeverEvolution, shot this one at 200 was hitting 6 inch steel plate everytime. I think we have enough rifles just not sure which one im going to take. I am going try and get some target pictures up. Have some bigger rifles, They are 2 heavy for Mountain hunting. Strut10
Almost sounds like a mini OTPG event. Some pretty stout irons you're shooting. I like it!!! Pics, quick!!!!
DocMort
Yeah I kinda like shooting the big stuff, the harder they hit the better. As far as pics go, I am almost back to Alabama so I am waiting for my little brother to post them. Hes not very computer Savvy and dad doesn't usually keep the targets after he records the numbers. jokostel
Preety much did the same thing this weekend... Antelope season is coming up in early October. 6 out of 7 of my rifles are tweaked, tested and reay to go. The 35 Whelen and the 300 Win are doing sub moa, so Im a happy camper.... Hows that 325 been treating you? In this part of the country... the cartridge (sadly) went up like a fart in the wind.
DocMort
The 325 has been a shooter we handload everything so we can tweak to what shoots the best but it will shoot right along with the 300's and 7mm all the way out to 400, The 7mm and the high BC bullets really start to shine then. It does hit hard though.
jokostel
I hear ya there..... handloading is definitely the WTG. The only rifle I don't handload for is my 2506... just because in the last year that I've owned it, I barely fired it 40 times... its mearely a truck gun/plinker. Not too mention, handloading for the rifles I have eats me out of house and home. Right now, just to reload what I have shot this year and to replentish the shelves is going to run me some $$$$$. It's part of the game though. I "may" build up a high-po 7mm this next spring. Id love to have an Ultra mag, but the brass price and the barrel life are bigtime deturrents for me. DocMort
I agree there, if you want more than the Rem, you can do the STW that right there is a flat shooting hard hitting son of a gun.
Strut10
I've got a 140 gr. Accu-Bond load that does 3605 fps with IMR-7828 in a 26" barrel. No pressure signs at all. Freakin' outrageous!!! I did have some trouble with a 130 gr. SMK load using Reloader 22 at the OTPG Spring Lead fling this year. I had shot the same load last fall at the Blast Off with no issues. This spring I was backing primers out!!! I'm thinking temperature variation with the R22. all's I know is that I'll be backing that load waaaaay off and retinking things a bit. jokostel
I had a 7mm Rem Mag (Ruger M77 Hawkeye) at one time... actually at the SAME time I bought My 280 Rem ( Rem Mountain LSS). The 280 Rem outperfomed the 7 Mag with 7 grains less powder and with the same bullet. (Rl22 and a 140 CT). That 7 Mag just had a high stress barrel on it.... for every grain powder incremented, the group opened up 1/2 inch.... I do think an STW is the right way to go. Im probably going to just buy a Ruger with a magnum action, and have it sent it for a new barrel in 7 STW... I guess you could call it a waste to do that to a new rifle, but... why the heck not build what ya want, instead of dealing with something you can barely stand? DocMort
You could have a STW built on a Ruger #1. That would be a sweet little concoction. My 7mm Rem in a savage with some 140 sierras will out shoot most of our varmint rifles. were talking 1/4" MOA to 250 and 300 yards.
DocMort
I'm not sure how the 7mm WSM performs some say its awesome. If it shoots with my 300 wsm then man you could have a nice rifle there. I got a steal on my 300 wsm, Brand new Rem Model 7, Camo, stainless fluted, Extreme conditions payed 500 for it. Strut10
The Ruger #1 can be had in a factory 7-STW chambering. You can still run across Model 70 Classics, sako 75's and Weatherby Mark V's pretty regularly, too. http://www.gunsamerica.com/998821874/Guns/Rifles/Ruger-Rifles/1-Type/Stainless_7mm_STW.htm http://www.gunsamerica.com/943565660/Guns/Rifles/Winchester-Rifles-Modern-Bolt-Auto-Single/Model-70/Post-64/WINCHESTER_MODEL_70_CLASSIC_CRF_7MM_STW.htm http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=136780302 http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=136537824 http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=136030104 http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=136840361
jokostel
Sadly, they USED to be built in a Number 1.... not since 2006/2007 I believe. I had two number 1s at one time a 243 win and a 300 win. I don't buy used weapons. Never have since Ive been old enough to buy my own, and never will.( Mostly because of the way people in this area treat them) I think a 7 mag in #1 reamed out to & stw would be the cheapest and by far the BEST solution... The number 1 actions are tough as nails.... and for the most part the barrels that ruger installs on them are MOA or better, IF you find the loadout that tunes well. DocMort
You can do it with an Encore also, Just have o be conscious of pressures. Match Grade Machine, and Virgin Valley I still believe make barrels.
jokostel
Yeah-- I have an Encore Muzzleloader... May be able to sacrfice the action for a few months out of the year... Never really thought about building one around that though... as the Rugers falling block action is much tougher. Now, if I was building up a 30/30 or another 280, the Encore would be my first choice to build the weapon around. All in all, it's going to have to be something I mull over this fall, and build it in the spring.
DocMort
Yeah I hear you, I was doing some research on it not to long ago, talked to my dad he has a few guys shooting one out of the encore claims they don't have a problem. Strut10
You can do it with an Encore also, Just have o be conscious of pressures. Match Grade Machine, and Virgin Valley I still believe make barrels. I much prefer a #1 to an Encore. But I'm not sure what the issues would be with the T/C. OTPG member Pudd has an Encore in .416 Rigby. I know that Rigby pressures are less than STW pressures. But there's a lot less meat left after a Rigby reamer's been run through a chamber than an STW reamer. Not sure why an STW wouldn't be do-able. DocMort
MGM told me with the STW something about the pressure puts alot of strain on the action kinda of like the reason they don't build WSM on the Encore.
