Does it bother you too????

When someone who is on a hunting show says:

"I did not want to take a bad shot on an animal of that quality"

So what does that mean....You'd take a bad shot on something not so big????:nono::chair:

How about maybe:

"I did not have a good shot so the only right thing to do was to choose to let him walk".

Well what bothers me sometimes is the fact that they have a perfectly good shot (IMHO) that they pass up in order to convey the highest ethics to the audience. I have confidence in my rifles, shoot them often, and don't have an issue with putting a bullet in a neck, or even in some other unorthodox places. I can't tell you when the last time I shot a deer with a gun that I did not recover. BUT.... it's TV, and they're on premium acreage, so I know it's no biggie to pass on them more than I personally would. So I suppose they're usually doing the right thing, but they may be making some guys new to the field a bit skiddish to make some shots. That, again though is prob for the best overall.

Everyones a critic these days.....

:D :D :D

Yep.

Really never thought too much about it Gary. Hear folks say lots of things they probably did not mean a certain way, sure I myself am guilty of it.

Soooo I guess to answer the question, no that does not really bother me, although I have heard hunters say that and kind of laughed to myself thinking the same thing, just never went any further than thinking that probably was not how the hunter really meant it.

I don't think anyone has the right to judge another hunters moral "compass" when it comes to NOT taking a shot.

There can always be another shot, or another critter down the way.

Having a great hunt does not always equate to bagging a "big buck" or a "big doe".

Now if someone made a bad shot, when they shouldn't have... because it was the last day they had to hunt, or a rushed shot at last light... THEN I would have a problem. Common Sense should have prevailed at that point in the game.

What really ticks me off, is when a bad shot with a bow is made, but the hunter is cheering and high-fiving the camera man just because he got an arrow in him. I've shot a few deer in my life and will not cheer until I see white belly on the ground.

my football coach told me a hunting story that made me really think,,he said he was sitting ther hunting and all of sudden he had this buck walk in,not the biggest buck hes shot but a shooter non the less,,he said he stood up not focused and made a bad shot,,he said he made the bad shot b/c he didn't take the buck serious b/c it wasn't massive.. he never found the buck and said he had a sick feeling in his stomach because he didn't respect the animal.. and from now on he respects evey animal he attemps to kill...

I think we tend to over judge what someone says on TV sometimes. I'm sure now they wish they had of said it different, but at the time all they could see was a nice quality animal, and it just speeled out like that. :)

Maybe it's just me, but I try to give people the benefit of the doubt.

I respect these guys passing up shots, thats more deer out there for us average people.I do know that if I am hunting with a rifle I am getting my shot and my deer.Only way would be is if he was walking through the woods or thick stuff and not stopping, then I wouldnt chance it.I am not going to take any risky shots that could injur the animal or any unsafe shots but I will get my shot.

Oh yea, what happened to Jim Zumbo, why did he retire?

Did not know he retired, but Jim Zumbo stuck his foot in his mouth when he claimed that there was no place in hunting for semi automatic AR's. He quickly learned how wrong he was, and he did apologize. He also took some lessons from Ted Nugent and made an appearance on the spirit of the wild show where imo he showed some humility.

Couldn't agree more Casey. I'm extremely particular on my bow shots, no forgiveness there. I hate when they make the shot, and then the laughing starts that you see on some shows. I know it's probably just excitement they can't contain, but it just doesnt look good.

Never much thought about those sort of comments Gary.

What does bother me is when one of those TV personalities shoots one behind the shoulder with a firearm when the deer is quartering hard toward them. After that kind of shot some even refer to it as a perfect hit. You'd think they would know better.

Gary, most in not all of us place the animals we hunt on some type of hierarchy for different reasons.

An example:

1. Deer

2. Rabbit

3. Prairie dog

To me the way to demonstrate good hunting ethics is make a clean quick kill regardless of how I rank the animal. However, I must say if I was a cattle rancher and Prairie dogs were making holes that were causing my cattle to be injured I wouldn't be as worried about taking the perfect shot as I would be shooting a deer.

That seems to be the common theme with ya GW!

Actually it usually is not...but it was the theme in this thread.

It was intended to provoke people into thinking about what was and is ethical while hunting...it did that..2 pages worth:camera::yes:

Not everything is as it seems:robot:
