woolybear
Guess I felt compelled to ask a very general question here I hope can lead to more discussion on the points I want to address. Hopefully the conversation will start itself as I'm heading out tonight for a bit. My tally is right around 50 going into this season. To me that's a pretty respectable # for my areas bag limits, time at it, and short seasons compared to other states. Let's start with how many... or approximately how many "deer in general" (bucks and does) you have killed thus far in your hunting lifetime, the length of your season, and your states bag limits. Orion_70
I'd guess I'm knocking around 100 give or take a few. I generally kill between 2-5 a yr. buck and doe. I'll take a doe or two and then see what bucks I can get. Seasons usually run from Oct1 - Jan 31 inclusive of archery, ML and Gun in La. with a 6 deer limit
The Kid
ive shot 21 bucks and 1 doe
ildrhntr
37 with a bow not including the mule deer, elk, bear, and antelope I have taken. If the mule deer could be counted it would be 38.
fly
Shotgun season (IL) is Fri/Sat/Sun before Thanksgiving and Thur/Fri/Sat/Sun after. Bow season is October 1 ~ Mid January. In IL only 2 bucks can be tagged per season. No limit on does. First deer was in 1987. First bow harvest was in 2003. Total=26 (17 bucks, 9 does) Shotgun bucks = 10 Shotgun does = 4 Bow bucks = 7 Bow does = 5 In case anyone was wondering... In IL. the DNR used to issue a deer pin at the check stations and I always kept my pins with the year on it. Made it easy to go back and count since I haven't harvested that many. When they went to telephone check-in a few years back I started keeping a journal for each season. Edited August 15, 2009 by fly
jokostel
40 some odd deer with centerfire rifles. 1 deer with a bow 1 with a muzzleloader. Out of all of these whitetails and mulies, 3 were bucks(legally consider bucks) and some were bucks that were considered does by North Dakotas laws. All legal kills obviously... I simply don't hunt without being on the right side of things....
wtnhunt
Started hunting in 1992 on our property. Killed my first deer in 1994. Have killed 30 something, 5 or 6 of those have been does. All with the exception of I think 4 have been killed right here in the backyard of our small farm. Those 4 were killed up the road less than 2 miles away at my inlaws. Did not kill a deer last year despite plenty of opportunities. Liberal limits the past few years have allowed for 3 does a day to be taken for the duration of the season starting near the end of September and ending in January. Total of 3 bucks are allowed statewide. Most deer I have killed in one year was 4, have killed 2 in one day, and had numerous occasions where could have killed more. Before my wife and oldest daughter started hunting killed 2 to 3 deer pretty consistently every year, focus has since shifted.
redkneck
Killed my first when I was ten, back in '83 or so. Used to keep count but nowadays I dont. Numbers don't mean a lot. I'm sure the number is over 100, but now I mainly try to shoot mature animals, and the does I kill to try to maintain a good ratio. Although in the last ten years or so, I try to put about 100+ pounds of ground deer in the freezer + sausage + steaks, etc..... we dont buy much beef anymore, and I am fortunate enough to have enough access to land that I am able to take my limit each year if I need to, which in MS is pretty generous. :eat: Edited August 14, 2009 by redkneck

Doc
I have put in 47 deer seasons with both bow and shotgun so far, and there is absolutely no way that I can even begin to estimate a number. All I can say is that it has been a bunch. We've had quite a few years with very generous doe permits and most of those seasons I have maxed out my tags. Sorry, but I really can't be any more specific than that. My memory is damned good but it's just a little short. Doc

sluggunner
I only started hunting in 1996, took my first deer in 1997 and quit hunting in 2007 (see post in the Lounge for the reason why.) Anyway I have taken a total of 15 deer all with a sluggun. 9 were Does, 6 were Bucks. All were very tasty.
Jorden
I started hunting when I was 12 which was almost 9 years ago. Took my first deer in the fall of 2004 and since then I have taken 4 more for a grand total of 5:jaw:. Our season usually runs from the 2nd weekend in september until the first weekend in january, with rifle season starting the saturday before thanksgiving and running through thanksgiving weekend. JackedUpZ71
I've taken probably taken around 25 in all my years of hunting. Started deer hunting at about the age of 9 and now I'm 22 so I don't guess thats too bad. The last few years I've only shot one or two a year but I'm ok with that. I've been holding out for a big one the last two years, and only shot does.

Randy
I started hunting in 1986. WI has had some pretty liberal limits on deer since I started hunting. They also allow "party" hunting (during gun season) which means as long as you are within yelling distance of another hunter in your party you can with his or her pemission fill their tags as well. My first year of hunting I shot 3 and I haven't slowed down since. I've killed 5 wallmounters in the last 8 years and it continues to get better every year. My dad always wanted me to kill "his deer" too so my numbers have skyrocketed to around 150. In the last 4 years I've killed 33. Last year I took a 15 year old out for the youth hunting and sat with him as he whacked his first buck and it was in full velvet in Oct. I haven't shaken that bad in years! LOL The adenalin that I felt was Awesome! I also took Charlie (doubleA) out last year for the Auction and enjoyed every second of it. I've had a blast last year sitting back and watching someone else doing the shooting. This year William is coming up for a week of bowhunting and I can't wait for him to get a chance at a big one. So, to answer your question, I've killed enough... I'm to the point in my hunting career that I'd rather share the blessings that I have had with someone who maybe hasn't had the chance to experience what I have. I get to enjoy the hunt just as much, if not more, through their eyes... Edited August 15, 2009 by Randy
backwoods07
In IL. the DNR used to issue a deer pin at the check stations and I always kept my pins with the year on it. Made it easy to go back and count since I haven't harvested that many. When they went to telephone check-in a few years back I started keeping a journal for each season. You can still pick up pins from all kinds of vendors for free!!!! Some Walmarts even have them. You just go in and ask for a harvest pin for that year.
