Since I have been using it, I am seeing at least four times as many deer as I did before. And before anyone says anything. No I don't have bad breath. But two things I can't live without now when I'm hunting are rangefinder and my scent control clothing. Then others have some they believe in that I don't. There's one thing for sure that's a can't miss item. A full body safety harness. I prefer the hunter safety system over all the others. Next in line would be the best pair of binoculars that you can afford. Look at it as a lifetime investment too. Buying a pair that is near to or top of the line will last you a lifetime. It's easier to justify the cost if you divide the cost by the number of years you have to hunt with them. I spend more $ on groceries in a weekend of hunting than my Swarovski binocs cost me to use on an annual basis. They also come with a lifetime warranty. Cheap binoculars just won't last. Now surely somebody wouldnt have suggested that..........'cept maybe the deer I love my thermocell, works wonders for skeeters. I'll second a good pair of binocs. I have Nikon, and has worked great for me for several years, but like Al said, you do get what ya pay for in optics. Other favorites over the years: Tink's 69, LaCrosse boots... I use the Drury growler. I don't growl, just grunt. I like it because I can make pop sounds the best with it. I also have had success with HS doe estrus wafers. ToddCountyKiller Posted August 18, 2009 Report Share Posted August 18, 2009 Have you ever noticed on Realtree Roadtrips, Bone Collector, The Cursh, and many other Hunting shows that they Do Not wear Scent Blocker Suits or Scent-Lok Clothing. And they don't dress in the feilds. They Dress eat breakfast and B.S. till its time to hunt. I know a guy that guides out in New Mexico for Elk, and he brought me on to this. Primos Silver XP. He poured a crap load of gas into my hand, then sprayed it down with the silver Xp. And I kid you not you could not smell the gas none. So there is always a bottle on me when I hunt so the deer dont smell me. AND when I go out with the guys, right before I walk in the door I spray down so the ol lady dont smell the strippers on me!! layin on the smackdown Posted August 18, 2009 Report Share Posted August 18, 2009 I'm going to take the easy way out...You can't go wrong with a bow or a gun that you shoot accurately consistently...A warm pair of boots to get you through those super cold days, those hand warmers and foot warmers are also a "can't miss" element of my gear in cold weather...Cant argue with the safety harness - thats a must. when it comes to calls, i have two, the one Fly mentioned by Drury, and a primos grunt/snort wheeze call...I use scent blocker clothes, and spray down, and dress in the field, and play the wind, and bla bla bla, but alot of it from this sentence on is personal preference. I use both real antlers and a rattle bag depending on my situation. I have not had very much success hunting over scents, but then again, all i have ever used was the real hot doe urine you get from game farms. Best was primos Can, Only thing i saw work someny times, grunting/weezing a buck and as soon as i used the can they turned right around and come straight in. i never go in the woods without it. That is to say, I've never shot a deer and said, "Man, thanks to this product I was able to harvest this deer." The only thing that helps me is a ton of scouting and preparation in the off season! If I absolutely had to pick, I'd say my Primos Buck Roar. I was able to bring in a spike about 15 times in the same hunt last year during the rut. Hands down I would have never gotten the many deer I have been fortunate enough to get with out the scent killer soaps, shampoos, clothes wash and sprays. I take scent control to the extreme. Then once I have licked the scent problem as much as I can the one thing that has always been a "Can't Miss" product you can't get in any store, and it is free, but it is priceless and that is the ability to sit motionless from before first light until dark day after day until a deer comes by. One bottle of Code Blue Doe in Estrus and one bottle of Tinks 69 (or 2 of each) - Gallon of water, Nice big thick hand towel and a string or rope. Dump the doe estrus in the gallon of water and put the rag (after you tie your rope through it) in the gallon of water/urine. Take it out to the field with you (Last week of October - 3rd week of Nov - in the north) Get near your stand and take the drag rag out and start dragging that thing all over creation. It should be soaked and dripping, keep it dripping and fling that stuff all over the place. Lead every trail back to your best shooting lane and then dump it like it was a scrape. Then take your rag and put it about 2-8 feet in the air by spreading it around a bush or something where the wind can carry the scent. Then climb your tree, brothers and sisters cause you are about to tag a deer. I took my first buck with a bow this way, my bro-in-law took his first doe this way (she had her nose so far in this drag rag, man!), My buddies dad took his first wall hanger because of this method, I shot another doe this way in Illinois 2 years ago, as well. You have to drench the rag and it should be dripping. Sometimes I'll swing the rag around trying to get the scent in the air. my first bow-buck walked right to the drag rag less than 1 minute after I climbed in my stand. Second - The Can. if you get busted by a doe, run that puppy and they'll stop. I've shot 2 deer after getting busted that way. There you have it - Gents.
