coles
Well guys, i bought that Ruger Hawkeye stainless/synthetic 270 from the place i work yesterday. I plan on shooting 130gr. Fusions since they shoot amazingly well out of my other ruger 270. Might as well have the same ammo for both guns so i dont have to worry about my girlfriend shooting the wrong ones. Im going to get a nikon buckmaster 3-9x40 BDC as soon as i get my full discount at work.
Rem308
Sounds good...take a camera along with you when you shoot, would like to see it in action! I have a Nikon Buckmaster...different power and not the BDC, but it's still a heck of a scope. Sounds like a top notch setup.
jokostel
Should be a reliable setup for many, many moons to come.
Shaun_300
Congrats on the new gun Cole! I haven't shot a hawkeye but sure love my Mark II!
hunterbobb
You should have bought a Remington 700, The Ruger is a great rifle too. I'm sure you will love it. 270 is THE best hunting caliber. Can't go wrong there.
coles
I have 3 remington 700's. I would have loved to buy one of those but couldnt pass up the price of the ruger. I love rugers too though. I was just pondering over the thought that my next rifle might be a remington 700 boone and crockett edition. Dont know what caliber though. Maybe 300 Win. jokostel
Truth be told... I've seen more production grade Remingtons have problems and shoot with less precision than Ruger or Savage. IMO, Ruger is a good buy if you want a gun that will function very well... and not cost you an arm and a newborn child.
ousoonerfan22
Federal Premium has the 150 gr partition in the .270 and my ruger no.1 will group decent with them. Did the 130 gr fusions work well on elk?
coles
i have not shot an elk with the fusions. I just bought the fusions to try them and they shot really well out of the first ruger 270 i bought. After seeing the damage on the 225lb plus whitetail i shot this last season i believe they would work for elk. Ill let you guys know how well they work if my girl shoots one with the fusions this year.
hunterbobb
Truth be told... I've seen more production grade Remingtons have problems and shoot with less precision than Ruger or Savage. IMO, Ruger is a good buy if you want a gun that will function very well... and not cost you an arm and a newborn child. I'm assuming your talking about Remingtons 710, or the 7400 Automatics. Because I assure you No other factory direct rifle currently on the market is even in the same class as the remington 700. This is why more custom gunsmiths use Remington 700 action than any other. When was the last time you heard of anyone building a custom rifle on a Ruger or a Savage action.
jokostel
Nope. Im talking about Model 700s. One was an LSS 7 Ultra, and one was a 243 winchester in SPS youth.... a few others but I don't recall the specifics right now.... The 243 was a literal shotgun... it didn't group, it PATTERNED- like a dang shotgun... 3+ in groups.... no matter what we did. The 7 ultra was a tack driver.... BUT Youd never notice what was wrong unless you handloaded. They didn't bore the chamber correctly, and each shot, it ruined the case... my brother went thru a few sizing dies before figuring that one out... The LSS was sent into Remington, and they did NOTHING for him.. (aka no new barrel)... they Just sent it back, saying that if it shoots factory ammo, thats all they require. jokostel
Don't get me wrong... I love the model 700 action. BUT, I like the mauser actions a lot more.... why? Personal preference.
Lead Poison
For years I loved and used Ruger rifles. However, until Ruger goes back to their original finishes, (both their original stainless and gloss blue), I will never buy another. I simply HATE the new matte Hawkeye finishes they are currently putting on their rifles-it shows EVERY SINGLE SCRATCH! Matte finishes also rust easier. Come on Ruger! Go back to the quality you once put in your rifle finishes!!! Why ruin an otherwise great rifle!!!
redkneck
Good luck with your new purchase Cole. Personally I've never owned a Ruger. My buddy has a stainless/syn bolt action in .280 and that's a sweet little gun, and I wouldnt mind having something along that line one day. hungry hunter
Gotta love the .270, I got the Remington 700 ADL in .243 cal. can't go wrong with either. .270 in 130 grain= 0 tracking. Enjoy the rifle.
coles
we went out a couple weeks ago and tried to sight it in. The weather was really hot and the rifle just wouldnt shoot like i wanted it to. So now im just waitin for some cooler weather to get out and get her dialed in. doubleA
Get out and shoot........ if I waited for it to be cool, I couldnt shoot except in January and February here in South Texas.:clown:
coles
i hear ya there. but the difference is that is actually gets cool here this time of year. I just have to find some time to go shoot. I have school during the day and work in the evenings. So i will work something out soon.
Adjam5
Rugers make tough guns. I have a 77V in .308(1980's model) and it is a tack driver. It is heavy and not too pretty, but the girl can shoot. Good Luck with the Hawkeye and let us know how it shoots.
