ohiobuckhunter
i was wondering if anyone knows if all 410's have a full choke barrel or if there's some out there with a modified. the reason being is that my son is going to hunt this year and in ohio you can use a 410 but i have always heard not to shoot a slug through a full choke barrel so what is your opinion of this thanks

Nickel
I have a hunting buddy who has a .410 with a variable choke barrel. He uses it from squirrel hunting to deer to ducks. But he says he cant take a shot at a deer over 100 yards the slug is slowing down so quickly that the energy ias almost non excistent. Texan_Til_I_Die
I remember seeing a bolt action 410 (Mossberg maybe?) with an adjustable choke. I'm not sure if you can shoot slugs through one of those type choke systems or not. I've also seen skeet shooters with high end guns in 410 that had all types of chokes, but those were all $1000+ rigs. Every other 410 I've seen, including the one I own, are full choked. Nickel
It is a mossberg .410 and he brought it to the local gunsmith to install the adjustable chokes. BUT IT STARTED OUT AS A FULL CHOKE.
Strut10
But he says he cant take a shot at a deer over 100 yards the slug is slowing down so quickly that the energy ias almost non excistent. The energy (for deer sized critters) is nearly non-existant at the muzzle. A .410 slug has well under 800 ft/lbs. at the muzzle and has dropped off to 400 ft/lbs at 50 yards. That's less retained energy at 50 yards than a .357 Magnum handgun, which a lot of folks do not consider a very adequate deer gun. Can't you find the young fellow an inexpensive 20 ga. somewhere??
