sluggunner
Hi all, I am thinking about buying a new .22 for squirrel hunting. I have a Remington 597 and it misfires and jamms up almost every other shot. I really like the fact that it is a semi-auto. Do any of you have a .22 that is accurate and dependable that you really like? I thought this was going to be a good gun when I bought it but it has really been a disappointment. What would you all suggest?
terry264
Marlin M-60, hard to beat and accurate. Saw one shot that hadn't been cleaned in this millenium 'til it finally caught fire inside, blew it out, shooter continued shooting. It never misfired or misfed throughout this process. Very accurate also. We finally treated it to a good cleaning afterward. :tt1:
coles
check out the ruger 10/22 if you are looking for a semi-auto. Marlin also makes a really nice bolt action which is the model 25 i believe. I have had one for at least 10 years and it never fails me. Deadly to say the least with remington yellow jacket ammo
woodshed
I have the Ruger 10/22 and it is awesome. It's dead nuts accurate putting bullets in the same hole. Reliable as all get out. It's very affordable and in my opinion the best bang for the buck.
redkneck
I think I got a .22 in every configuration but a pump. My Marlin lever is my fav to shoot, but as was pointed out, Ruger 10-22's have shown their reliabiltity over the years. Personally, I'd get that 597 to a good gunsmith and put the money you'd save on another .22 on something a little hotter. If you want to stick to a small caliber, why not look at a .22 mag, or .17HMR? Don't get me wrong, I love my .22's, but would rather own something different than have a second .22 semi. What would you all suggest? Have heard the plastic clips caused some issues. Do you have the metal clips or plastic clips? What ammo? We have run probably over 600 rds through my daughters 597 and never had a single jam or misfire.
sluggunner
Tried btoh clips. At first I thought it was the planstic clip because I had read the same thing. So I went out and bought the metal clip for me and Markyj987 because I felt guilty because I was the one who recdommended the 597 to him and the problem was worse for both of us with the metal clip so I went back to the plastic clip. I did learn never to load more than 8 shots in the clip as that seemed to help for awhile. I use Remington ammunition. Not the cheap stuff. but the gun frequently misfires or does not eject the shell after it does fire or does not load the next round after it does fire. The action is kept clean but it seems to stick and slam forward real hard after a shot. It is very frustrating.
dlriggins
I currently use the marlin mod. 60 and have very few issues with it it is reliable and is inexpensive plus you can purchase any worn out parts through marlins website. the ruger 10-22 is also a great gun and the ad ons are seemingly endless and readily available. I dont understand your probs with the remmington they usually make a top notch product have you contacted them to see if they can help if you havent had it long it may still be under warranty as far as I know remmington still warranties their rifles for 2 years

iaminc0gnito
remington 597Ive had problems with this gun from the get go. It misfired constantly, the firing pin will hit the bullet, but wont fire it. I have used all ammunition on this gun, even remington brand. And I am sorry, i know certain guns work better with certain ammo, but if the remington brand gun doesnt work with remington brand ammo, well i dont want anything to do with it. The hold open mechanism just totally fell apart. I had purchased a 30 round mag off of the remington website, and the magazine didn't even fit, and then it just caused the gun to jam up. After many attempts to have it repaired and get it working again i just gave up. I only had the gun for 6 months. Total piece of crap. I decided to just send it back to remington, I didn't even want my money back. However after all the time and money i spent on the gun I wanted to save on shipping so i just decided to reduce the size of the gun for convenience. DON'T BUY THIS GUN!!!!! oh actually stray away from remington, My 870 jammed up straight out the box.
MichiganHunter
LOL....well ok how about a ruger 10/22, I've got one my step dad has one. Mine has (this is a rough guess) 12,000 rounds threw it and is still great.
Rem308
You will get a lot of recommendations for the Ruger 10/22, and it is a great gun that has a very strong following. My grandfather has an old carbine and it still performs great. I also would recommend the Marlin Model 60, it's a dandy too at an affordable price. I have had mine for about 4 years now and no complaints at all. Both are excellent guns, you won't be disappointed.
scottgray18
Any marlin really. They are a pretty rugged gun. I was given my 22 wmr by my uncle and this gun wasn't in the best of conditions. I refinished the stock and cleaned it up nicely and i put a new sweet 22 scope on it and it is the best rimfire rifle that i have shot besides my savage 17.
