sluggunner
OK, I know this is my fault. I have some deer heads in the freezer that have been in there like 4 years. The ears are so freezer burned it is almost like they are dehydrated. The rest of the cape, eyes, lips nose etc are fine. Do I just have to throw these out because I can't for the life of me figure out how I am going to get the carteledge out of them to put the earliners in. Any ideas? Could I just soak them in water for a couple of days? Will they ever soften up? If I leave the cape submurged for several days will I have major hair slippage problems? Do you think I could get away with just skipping putting the earliners in and card the ears real good so they don't curl as they dry? I'm at a loss. RTF
Turn the lips, nose and eyes. Flesh the cape and then get it into a pickle. The pickle should prevent any slippage and you will be able to leave the cape in it for weeks, if you have to. Maintain the proper pH and salt content of your pickle. Keep checking ears and hopefully they will rehydrate so you can turn them.
sluggunner
Thanks RTF I'll give it a shot, at this point I have nothing to loose, except for a couple of real nice capes from deer I took. Serves me right for being a procrastinator.:hammer1:
RWTaxidermy
Freezer burn is no longer a problem. Give these 2 products a try and see for yourself. http://www.whitetailsystems.com/HardTissueTonic.html http://www.whitetailsystems.com/Stop-Rot.html
