mossyhorn
...the freakiest thing to ever happen to you while hunting, or going to a spot to hunt? I would have to say mine was hearing what has to be the oddest sound ever in the woods. It was 5:30am pitch black walking to my stand and from i guess about 50 yards I hear a howl, bark, or a scream. I can't be sure but it was loud and went woooooot, woot, woot. Not in those word but you get the piont. I know it was not a owl because it sound more like a child or a woman. But I know it wasn't a person being I was half a mile in the woods on private land. Needless to say I made it up the tree in seconds. camoman1
Im sure others have had close calls like this too but heres mine... I was sitting in my stand overlooking a foodplot hoping to tag a doe. I was just watching 3 or 4 squirrels run around collecting acorns...when all at once, every squirrel jumped onto the side of a tree just above ground level and froze. I was expecting to see a coyote or something coming through, so I slowly pulled my release hand out of my pocket and rest it on my lap. About 15 seconds later I catch movement to my right, but eye level with me. I turn in time to see some kind of hawk coming at me with his little death talons open like hes gonna grab me. I turned as to not get my face scratched up. He aborted mid-air when I moved. I can only think that he saw me pull my hand out of my pocket and thought it was food sitting there for the taking. The_Kat
Mine was when I had a squirrel run acrossed my chest and up my shoulder while sitting in the stand. Ever since then I let them suckers know I'm there cause their claws are SHARP and they use em when they're climbing. I've seen people do some pretty dumb stuff out at the public land I hunt too. Seen a guy belly crawl across a food plot for absolutely no reason....????
HUNTINGMAN
I got out of my truck one morning about a mile back in the woods when I heard the sound of something screaming like a woman.THe hair stood on the back of my neck and I had chills go up my spine. Needless to say I got back in my truck and waited for daylight to go to my stand. Looking back I think it was probably a bobcat but we have never seen one or any sign in the 23years I have been hunting this farm.

Adjam5
It had to be beyond a shadow of a doubt, wrestling and drowning my son Joes 1st deer, he was 14. He spined it with his 1st arrow, 2nd arrow, gut shot it, and it was pulling itself down towards the reservoir behind the house. We have a no firearm discharge in this town or I would have shot it. The doe made it to the stream and the current pulled it down stream. Heck...I had my rubber boots on... this stream is shallow...right? WRONG! I sank and was knocked over from the rushing stream (Dec 7th and it is 15 degrees out). I float down and catch up to the doe at a blowdown, she is bawling like mad. I get to my feet grab her by the neck and under she goes kicking like mad. She was dag gum strong , but my adrenaline was flowing. Joe was watching it all on the shore with his mouth open in total disbelief as to what was happening. I won, the deer lost. But did the deer really lose? I had a digital camera in my pocket, soaked from my swim, was at the brink of frost bite from having been in the stream in Decemeber. THEN... to top it all off, I cut my finger sticking the knife through its ear to put the tag on it( fingers were numb from the cold), go to the ER for stiches and the nurse comes running out asking me if I am OK...I said I cut my finger..."but you have blood all over you"..."Oh that...you should see the other guy"..." I'm calling the Police!" NO don't...It is only deer blood, I was butchering a deer and got cut" I had a $100 co pay at the ER and 5 stiches in my left index finger and a no good digital camera to boot... So did the deer lose? It had the last laugh. That incident made Joe a crackshot with his bow. He has NEVER had to track a deer since. Kinda reminds me of someone I know quite well!! After seeing his face after his ordeal, I can easily picture yours when you got home. Fantastic and hopefully once in a lifetime memory. MNhunterr
Well there is a few of them. I was leaving a field I was scouting at dark, I just walked out there and didn't drive because it was a great night. As I was leaving this huge hay field I hear a coyote start howling, there is a pack of them in a rock pile we were by. I didn't think anything of it and howled back, as I did this not 1 second later an entire pack started howling and screaming. I instantly froze, I couldn't move my body or anything I was so scared, I finally forced myself to run because I knew they were only 100-200 yards behind me. So the only thing I could do was run as fast and as hard as I could... Luckily for me they stopped chasing after a while and I was able to get to the house. The other instance happened just this last gun opener. It was about 8 am and it was one of the quietest mornings I've ever heard, all of a sudden in the distance I hear someone screaming helllllllllllp. It kept doing that over and over for about 5 minutes, it was a very weak help so they must have been far away but it still gave me chills. GWSmith
Freakiest Thing??? That would have to be getting my gear ready the night before opening day and putting it next to the front door...and Not hearing "Your going to carry all of that in with you"? hungry hunter
Weired:bat:, Well I think I got two, the first thing is right at day break I heard a pack of huntin dogs running a deer, then It sounded like all hades breaking loose with dogs yelping, I figured that they had bayed up one mean boar hog. This went on for 30 minutes. When i came down from the tree stand I went to the location, I found 8 dead dogs. Believe it or not they were slammed into a huge tree and all busted up. The ground was tore up. I didn't stick around to look for tracks, there was also a stink of garabage and rotten eggs in the air. The second one was at 5:30 in the morning and pitch black, I heard the ungliest grunting I have ever heard within 10 feet of my stand, when I turned on the light it was some other bow hunter squatting over a log relieving his backside. He got the area to himself.
MUDRUNNER
One morning, about an hour an a half before light, I was walking through an overgrown weed field to my stand. The field is about 4' tall of blonde grass, weeds, and shrubs. It was a fairly bright moon, so I didn't bring my flashlight with me. When I was about half way through though the weed field I see the weeds parting about 20 yards ahead of me, and whatever it is, it's running straight at me. It made some growls and what sounded like a squeel from a hog as it was running towards me. When it was about 5 or 6 feet from me I let out a few loud barks and kicked my foot, and it turned and ran in the woods. To this day I still don't know what it was, but it sounded pretty mean. I always take my flashlight with me now.
toddpipkin
Luckily for me they stopped chasing after a while and I was able to get to the house. A coyote is the fastest animal on four legs in North America!! If they had been chasing you, you would have been caught!!! The other instance happened just this last gun opener. It kept doing that over and over for about 5 minutes, it was a very weak help so they must have been far away but it still gave me chills. A person was calling for help, and you just sat and listened to them call until it stopped????????? What if it wasn't very far away???? What if it were very near, but the person was very weak from hypothermia, shock, loss of blood, etc., ????
fly
2-3 coyotes can sound like a lot more! Coyotes can run in larger packs, but often they are in pairs. The coyote is fast, but not the fastest! They don't call the pronghorn a speed goat for nothing!
dlriggins
was bow hunting about 7 years ago it was a nice sunny day and all of a sudden felt rain on my right shoulder only to look up and find a squirrel about 3 feet above me on a branch.... you guessed it right above my right shoulder needles to say it wasn't rain. on another hunt in southern Indiana I saw a large cat (think it was a bobcat) Indiana is not supposed to have large cats not in that area

Don't know why I would lie to a forum full of hunters like myself about an incident that happened with coyotes haha. And about the "help" sounds I heard, it sounded as if it was well over a mile away, and I had no form of transportation at the time. Otherwise I would have obviously went and checked out the situation, you just don't leave someone scream for help and not do anything. Mirage
Almost ditto, except mine was a screech owl and it came at me 3 times. Thank God it was cold and I had my coveralls on, or I would have talon marks in my chest. I had pulled a glove off my left hand and eased up for a chest scratch. That was all the motion he needed to see to move in for a kill. I bet this has happened to a lot of guys.
redkneck
I also kicked a skunk once. That wasn't weird, it was flat-out stupidity at its finest. I don't recommend anyone try that, it didn't turn out well for me. :hammer1:
