MossySNPR
I have heard that when a fawn is born, it is scentless. And that the only reason a fawn may begin to smell like a deer, is because of the doe grooming and being around it. I am talking about a newborn fawn maybe 2 - 3 weeks old, not a deer that is about to mature and begins producing breeding scent. Is this true? dogdoc
Re: Newborn Fawns Scent yes it is true that a new born fawn has no scent. A way of protection while the little one mature.
VermontHunter
Re: Newborn Fawns Scent A new born Fawn is totally scent free...when we say sent free we mean in the sense that it doesn't smell like a deer.....I do see where you are coming from and I can't honestly say why the Doe wouldn't leave her scent on the Fawn while grooming and nursing.... I think I just confused the issue more for you sorry..

Guest ronin
Re: Newborn Fawns Scent I'm not sure if they can be scent free. I believe it may be different and not as strong as an adult deer but they have to produce some type of odor. All living creatures do, some more some less. I've had dogs that have found newborn deer. The only difference that I could see was that the scent pool for the young one was much smaller and the dog didn't hit until very close. Where as with an adult deer, my dogs hit the odor from 300+ yards if the wind is right.
wtnhunt
Re: Newborn Fawns Scent Yep, a fawn will have only the scent the mother doe leaves on it with her tongue when she is grooming it. The doe will eat the afterbirth and everything else including any feces and will also lick up any blood, so the area for birthing is also pretty well scent free.
