fly
Yesterday evening after returning from dinner I had a message that our beagle "Dorothy Parker" got loose and was wondering around the neighborhood. Silly thing was a slave to her nose and followed it anywhere. I have a fence and an electric fence under the ground because she would always dig under it. Well I guess the battery in her collar went dead and we didn't know it. The message on our phone (from someone down the street) stated they were going to place her back into our back yard fence. Well when we got home we looked and no Dorothy. I'm sure she just went out again once they left. We looked all over but couldn't find her. This morning on my way to church I spotted her on the side of the road about a mile down the highway. Thank God I was the only one who did. I took the kids to Sunday school and then went back home to tell my wife. She wasn't feeling good and decided to stay home this morning. She was very upset. Anyway, I spent the better part of the day at my dad's place in the country digging a grave. First time I have done that. The youngest kids don't know yet. We're going to tell them Tuesday and have some kind of goodbye ceremony. Too bad I haven't had the money to buy a set of bag pipes yet. Dorothy was a sweet dog, but advanced in years. Her health had started to decline this past year. I don't think she suffered much because based on her injuries I'm pretty sure it was instantaneous. Dakota
Gosh, hate to hear that, Fly. It's always hard for the little ones when a beloved pet dies, though I think it is even harder for the parents. Dakota
GWSmith
So sorry to hear about your familys loss of the beloved pet/member of your home. I can relate to having to dig that grave for the first time just a few years back(it still seems like it was only months). I had to go out and buy a shovel because I simply did not have one here. There is really no use for one around here and even less use for that one now that it was used for that purpose. After Harley died I spent the better part of the following day building a cross in the garage alone. My Wife never wanted to get another dog. She had allowed herself to become attached to this one and she really felt the loss. Just recently we decided to get another dog and went to a shelter to find her. The nice thing about what that did for us is that it helped us realize that we remember all the good times we had with our other dog. This one is different but in many ways I would imagine they react just the same to love and affection;) The pain goes away in time and there will be the good memories they leave with you that you remember them by;)

OJR
So sorry to hear this. I know what it is like to lose a pet!
woolybear
That's never any fun and even harder to explain to the kiddos. I'd probably get a new pup pronto before the burrial ceremony. It can be very devastating to the young ones to accept such a loss.
Tom2008
That is really sad to hear about. One of the worst feelings in the world is knowing that your dog won't be around anymore.
