Well team.....i don't know what to say....I have come down hard with what seems to be a very uncurable disease.....

SMALL BUCK SYNDROME

symptoms: ongoing encounters with 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 year old bucks, switching stands and still consistently having encounters with said bucks, lots of trail camera pics of said bucks, lack of doe sightings, only seeing small bucks at extremely close range between 12 and 9 yards, not being able to go out without having encounters with small bucks...

I cant say that it gets me angry or anything, but it is actually getting annoying. I have yet to even draw my bow so far this year. This is by far the longest i have ever gone into a season without having a deer down, much less even drawing on one. I did have an encounter with a mature doe saturday morning, but she was heading the wrong direction and i was strapped for time as i had to be at work. I hit it hard this weekend, and will be hitting it hard this week until i put one down. Something has got to give. On another note, i did also get some pics of some decent bucks working scrapes in daylight, so that is encouraging. Still waiting for signs of a few giants that i know are around.

this is just my luck too. So i took a friends son out hunting last night...he's 16 and a first year deer hunter. Feel bad for him that he has no one to show him the ropes, so i decided to take him out and put him in a stand i have not hunted yet...i told him the rules, gave him some ranges on some objects, told him where the deer will be coming from, and let him at it...sure enough, what does he have walk by, but a momma doe and 2 yearlings!!!! He wasn't ready to shoot, so they got lucky and lived to see another day....but what the heck was that! so what do i do? I go and sit in that stand this morning, and sure enough what comes by me? A small 6 pointer and a fork horn....I am cursed!!!!!

Will be hunting everyday this week...i'll keep ya posted. good luck to all!

Dan

Hey Team...I have made it out a few times and seen only a small buck and a small fawn. Oh... let me not leave out the never stopped moving coyote. The wide 8 that has been a legend around here for 5 1/2 years is dead. Our neighbor stuck him at 35 yards dead center of the front of his chest. A bitter sweet ending for such a good old deer. He measured green 115". So while he wasn't P&Y, he was the biggest deer I have ever seen alive or had the opportunity to harvest. I am unable to use my climber, but ladder stands I can climb easy. The knee is coming along nicely. I will be back up at my Catskill hunting camp again this weekend for another go at it.

Good Luck Team.

Anthony

Got a nice Illinois 11pt for our team! Now i just gotta figure out how to get pics on here again lol. How does the scoreing work for this contest?

Way to go HORSE SHOE!!!!! hahaha. Well done mathew, ata boy! you got us another 16 points as long as all 11 points are at least one inch long. 5 points for the deer and 1 point for every antler 1 inch or longer.

Holy smokestacks!!!:jaw:That is a humdinger. Way to go, Matt.

After your earlier nice gesture of helping out that family with the doe you shot, you really deserve this guy. That's how karma works.:)

As for score, he is an automatic bazillion points and all the other teams will now throw their arms in the air and battle it out for second place. I haven't yet looked to see if you entered him officially already, but put a rush order on it and don't forget the tag picture. [texastrophies last updated the scoreboard on the 16th, so I imagine he's about to do it again.] Smokin'!

Well team, i got good news...I finally dusted a doe last night...29 days into the season...wow!!! man am i glad the curse has been lifted. I probably saw more does last night out there than i have seen all year...they are definitely getting pushed around. I elected not to enter her, as i am confident another one will fall, and with any luck, it will be another wall hanger. super crappy out today in IL, so i decided not to bother going out...this weekend is looking really good though, so maybe i can connect again. Some giants are beginning to eat dirt around here, so the rut is closing in...Once again, i am not very confident in my place to hunt here, but i will be heading to east central IL the second week of Nov for about 5 days...this area is my playground. Good luck to all!

be safe!

Well team, it was a rather unproductive afternoon...I had a little 6 ptr come by at 2:05 pm with his lip up and on a mission...other than that, some other idiot that hunts the same ground shot a 2 1/2 year old 8 that i have been passin on left and right...My buddy who hunts about an hour south of me killed his second buck of the season tonight, first one grossed 161, this one grossed 172...he's got some great ground though - not like what i have to deal with...sounds like the rut is about here. Good luck to all and be safe!

I hope you connect you that booner Dan :).

I be heading up to camp this afternoon and will be hitting the woods as often as I can, setting a few traps also. The knee is feeling better, maybe 65% healed. It has been getting cold here and reports of the chasing going on in the woods. I think this weekend would be a good one to go heavy on the scent use since the bucks have had their noses glued to doe rumps.

Good luck team and hunt safe.

Hey Team.

I hit the woods this weekend again with little results. Small does and a button buck. I had a forkhorn stand/bed down in front of me for about an hour at 10 yds! In my area in NY(3H), there are antler restrictions(3 on one side), so this buck is a no no for anyone under 17. He did put on a good show for me I must admit. I got luck trapping another prime furred coon. The coon has silver tipped hair. I will be headed back up to my camp this weekend for another crack at the deer up there. The knee is getting better by the day and I am thinking about it less.

Good luck team and hunt safe.

Anthony
