coles
Hey guys. Ive been thinking hard about a couple rifles. First of all im thinking about getting a Remington 700 VTR in 308 for long range deer, antelope, and paper shooting. But also ive come to want some rifle in a 257 roberts these past couple days. Whats your opinion the remington and the 257? Ive never shot a 257 but i like it for some reason. Its one of those calibers that i dont need but want one just because i want one. jokostel
The "quarter-bores" have always been,in my eyes... a "black sheep" in American hunting culture. They do the job, and do it extremely well. a 120gr pill doing 2750-2850 out of a roberts is NOTHING to scoff at. I have a 2506 and a 257 roy in quarter bores... I still have yet to hit up the range with the latter. If you handload... the roberts, for the majority of deer hunting/goat hunting- is hard to beat. Zero
Depends if you can find the brass and a good bullet that's in your price range for the .257. I agree on .25 cal rifles being deadly on deer...so many people have a .30 cal+ mentality...it's a whitetail not an elk.
coles
well guys. my dad does reloads alot. I want to get into it and have some general knowledge about it. i just dont have the space or the time to get my own reloading stuff. I really dont mind buying factory ammo for guns since i work at a sporting goods store and get a really good discount on it. I just love rifles and for some reason i have always been intrigued by the 257 roberts. I dont feel the same about the 257 weatherby though. I could never bring myself to buy a box of their ammo. I just love short action rifles. now i just have to find one in my price range. I think if we get a ruger 77 hawkeye walnut/blued in 257 roberts i might not be able to control myself! lol
Zero
If that's what you want then go for it! All that matters is your confidence and ability, 99% of guns shoot better than the people behind them can and anything .223 (arguably smaller) and up will cleanly take a deer if you put it where it needs to go. csualumni21000
308. Bullet choices are much greater. More vendors and sizes.
m gardner
You said you were looking to buy a long range rifle for medium game. And you want a 25 caliber too. Look at Weatherby's 257 and buy one gun. I think their Vanguard comes in 257 Weatherby and it's a bargain. The Mark V in the ultralight is a nice rifle too. csualumni21000
Barrel life also.
RangerClay
The 257 is a great gun. Don't forget Browning makes a few rifles that shoot the 257. I almost bought one myself a while back.
Grady269
.257 I have a Remington M-700 Mountain Rifle in .257, It is my all-time favorite rifle. Hard to find rifles in .257 now adays, Remington has thir anual special edition CDL out this year in .257, should be a very sweet rifle. If you don't reload Hornandy makes an SST and Federal makes a Nosler Partition that are pretty more than decent.
coles
Remington's special edition this year is a way out of my price range. We have one at work and its well over $900.
Grady269
The only ones i can think of factory chambered for .257 Roberts are the 700 special edition, Ruger 77 hawkeye, and Kimber 8400. I know a couple of folks that have the Ruger and are happy with them. Weatherby $399 for .257 Mag.
JimT
I just shot in my $399.99 Vanguard. Great shooter for the money. I'll second this gun in .257 Wby Mag. Ammo is expensive but worth it I figure.
jokostel
Speaking of which, last weekend... I shot my 257 Weatherby for the first time... she does about .35moa @ 100yards with a 115CT and RL22. What a sweet weapon to shoot.... doing 3230 with her right now... the SD and ES are extremely low.
