GaryO
My son-in-law has a birthday and I would like to get him his first quality hunting knife for field dressing deer-size game. I am thinking fixed blade, full-tang, drop point, 4-5 inches with a leather sheath if I can find one for under $100. With so many possibilities out there, what say you? wtnhunt
Welcome to the forums Gary. My favorite knife has been my gerber gator. It is a folder, but they have them in fixed blades now I believe, and they are pretty inexpensive knives for what they are. Handle just fits my hand right and it holds an edge really well. Have dressed out and skinned a many deer with that knife.

Turkeygirl
I'd say Gerber or Buck is the way to go....I happen to like my Buck. I also have a super sweet custom folder that's yet to see blood, lol.

coles
i would say go with gerber or buck. I absolutely love my buck. ive gutted 6 elk, 15 deer, and 4 antelope with it. all it takes is a couple strokes on a stone and its back like new. i have this one. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0006503610346a&type=product&cmCat=SEARCH_all&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&No=36&Ntk=Products&QueryText=buck+knives&sort=all&_D%3AhasJS=+&N=0&Nty=1&hasJS=true&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jsp.form23&_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1 mine just doesnt have the gut hook or serrated blade. I love the looks of the wood handled ones but it would jsut be to slippery when covered with blood IMO. I carry it more than any of my other knives. My Gerber holds a good edge too but its a folding knive and i hate tryin to clean hair, blood, and fat out of the hinge after gutting an animal. toddyboman
Gerber sells a kit that has these 3 things in it......It should be under $100. But I would strongly recommend it. The knife is awesome, holds a great edge, the saw works wonders on bones.....
m gardner
I love my Cold Steel Master Hunter for the big stuff and my Knives of Alaska Alpha Wolf for everthing else. Both under $100.00. Mark

Widowmaker
I have the buck zipper that is not serrated. Great knife!
fly
Several good options out there regrading manufacturers as others have stated. I'll offer this up to think about. I've had some fixed blad knifes that only get used when we are butchering up deer. It does not go to the stand with me because non-folding knifes are too bulky and require a sheath. They just are not as practical for the hunter than needs to pack light. I use a fold up Buck something like the one below. It has the saw for ribs, the edge, and the gut hook. brownie65
There are several great knife brands, you can get a very very nice hunting knife for $100 and less. I like Case, Buck, Gerber, Kershaw and Cutco brands. I have several of each brand, these are just my favorite brands. Have several other brands also. Look around you will be able to find a very nice knife.
redgreen
Gerber Gator. I have a couple of them, and really like them.
jm23494
I'll throw another vote up for the Gerber Gator. They hold a great edge and with the shape and material of the grip are easy to hold when they get covered in blood. As far as clean up I usually soak it in some hot soapy water and then scrub it with a soft bristiled brush. Then it's a trip through the dishwasher and it usually all ready to go again. stcif
I believe Buck are made in America. I use the 120. Love it. I also like Kabar knives. The ones with the wrapped leather handles. They are not made in America though. But they are inexpensive. I have found great knife deals on eBay, brand new.
wildguy
I just got a Buck omni hunter 12pt this year, still haven't got to use it though!
joeaveragehunter
skipping everyone elses opinions. Go folding knife. safer all around. Tried and true for generations is a good ol' buck knife. Gander mountain $40. Still have mine from my dad going on 12 years now. ( why would you want to take away the chance of cutting the stomach with a gut hook) haha
