Widowmaker
Last year my woods was logged and this happen to be a spot that was right in front of a tree that I always hunt out of. Earlier this spring I noticed deer were coming into this area and eating on the flowers, grass, and weeds that were growing. My fear was that brush, weeds, and unwanted trees would eventually take it over and I wouldn't be able to see through this area. So, August 8th I weed whipped this area and sprayed it down with round up. August 15 I borrowed a disk that I pulled with my atv, seeded it by hand, and spread fertilizer. It's not that big but I plan on making it bigger next year. I planted Throw-n-Grow. Here are some pictures after 7 days... PotashRLS
You have a good start there. Do you plan on trying to remove the stumps when you make it bigger?

Widowmaker
You have a good start there. Do you plan on trying to remove the stumps when you make it bigger? Yes, I plan on removing the stumps and making it alot bigger next year. After you have seen where it is and what I am dealing with, what would you suggest for a fall plant? PotashRLS
I would get a soil test so you know what you are up against. The Throw and Grow is good from what I hear. That type of blend is what you want for a small plot like that. You would be wasting your time with a perennial (clovers and alfalfas) in my opinion. The plot is just too small for that. I am partial to the Whitetail Institute's blends based on past experiences and know that their "Secret Spot" blend is made for little plots just like yours. I have personally seen it do pretty well in less ideal soils as long as you attempt to lime and fertilize it like the bag says.

joeaveragehunter
WARNING! Thats how it starts. One small one and then boom, youre always working on making an old one bigger or a new one in a different spot. I started with clearing one three years ago and have four quality ones now with plans for two more next year. Its tough carving them out of the woods, but the blood sweat and tears are more than worth it. -Stick with a no plow blend for now-
