Randyman
Knocked off my first limit of Squirrels of the season this morning. 4 Fox and 1 Gray, 3 cutting Black Walnut and 2 cutting Shag Bark Hickory. It almost isn't fair when they're cutting! I was hunting public ground that only allows Shotguns. I really found myself wishing I could use my trusty Marlin .22 bolt action up there. So much more fun to hunt Squirrels with a rifle! One side note, I heard what must have been Bobcats going at it! While I've never seen one in the wild, there have been confirmed sightings in the County I was in. There is no way house cats could have made the amount or volume of racket I heard. It was just getting good and light and it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up! I am certain it was not Coyotes. If it wasn't Bobcats, I don't want to know what it was! :jaw:

Beagleman78
Limit of 5 Randyman Good deal on your squirrels ! we have fox squirrels here in FL , but are no longer allowed to take any. Just arnt that many as when I was a kid. I use to see them all the time while I was growing up and in certain areas especialy in and around Black Jack Oaks I see some.but still not like I did when I was a kid. They have some purdy coats on some of them... I picked up a fresh killed road kill Fox Squirrel a few years ago and mounted him on a large piece of oak tree bark man he was a very unique color ,almost all white with four black feet and head. Wish I could find another to mount and put with him on the same piece of oak bark. Hunt or Be Hunted... Good luck to you Bro ...

Down here we have a few hickory trees but in my area not many . farther north in FL theirs a lot of hickory here its mostly Oaks,Sweet Gum and pine & cypress. Thanks ... Here in Illinois we have 2 basic types of Hickory trees. The Mocker Nut (my Dad always called them Pig Nuts) and the Shag Bark. The Mocker Nut has a smoother bark and a smaller nut and the Shag bark has bark that looks like it is "peeling" and a somwhat bigger nut. The Shag Bark nuts tend to ripen first and the Mocker nuts a little later in the Fall. The leaves look virtually identical except the Shag Bark leaves will be bigger. Hope this helps.
