Dakota
Hey all! Man, what a rush! I still can't believe I have harvested my first big game animal with archery tackle! First, I must admit that I've missed 4 (that's right...I said 4 ) times: Ken's Booner twice in five minutes, a doe later on yesterday and a good buck in the high 70s earlier this morning; all of them were right over the back. This morning I was sitting in one of the blinds Buckee sat in last year. Saw a huge buck with about 8 does and fawns bedded and chewing their cud in the lawn/ditch of one of the houses across the road (about 411 yards away). I was so busy watching them that I didn't see a doe come in right behind me. By the time I saw her she was 60 yards out and walking away. I drew back and knew I could make 60 yard shots but, considering the events of yesterday, the shot just didn't feel right and I let down. Well, long story short: I was real cold, that was the last antelope I saw that came that way and the rest were moving off so I decided to go back to Steve's for a cup of hot coffee, some food and a nice warm coat. I know...I'm a wimp! :D:D On the way back I saw a great buck and his harem grazing in someone's yard. I pulled in and asked if I could hunt and they said I could kill as many as I want! Another long story short: I whiffed right over his back at 50 yards. Of course... I left Steve's around 11:40am this morning with my belly full and my outlook positive. For those of you who have never had the fortune of the Beilgard's legendary hospitality, Steve's house is three houses down the gravel road that meets up with the highway. I turned left, going west back towards my blind, and immediately spotted a decent buck and two does in the front yard of the first house going west on the north side of the highway. I decided to pull in and see if the owner of the house would let me hunt. I just pulled in like I owned the place, I slammed the car door and the antelope couldn't have cared less. The owner was real friendly and said by all means. So I go to the front passenger side and pull out my Monster and nock a Rage 2 tipped Beman. As I shut the door I see the buck right in front of me, giving me a perfect broadside shot and he's looking reeeaaaalllyyyyy good! :D:D I originally just wanted to take one of the does, but this buck is too good to pass up. I ranged him at 34 yards, put the 30 yard pin right on his vitals and let loose! THWACK! Blatt! The buck bucks on impact and lets out a loud bleat. Immediately I can see blood coating his side and pouring onto the ground! He runs along a white picket fence and debates whether or not to cross the highway. I can see him from about 80 yards away and can see the Beman hanging out of both sides of him and the blood is still dripping. This is basically an urban antelope hunt and I didn't want somebody calling the police, sheriff or GF&P so whie I wanted to give him his space I couldn't afford to. The buck slowly walks up a hill on the side of a church....more later! Gotta pick up one of our hunters! Dakota
