Well he's back! My first from this particular taxidermist. My old taxi charges close to 600.00 now and although his work is OK, I don't think it's $600.00 OK! Only took 10 months and cost me $350.00 (got a free hat too!) So lets here what you all think!I'd appreciate honest opinions please. If there's something you like what exactly or if there is something you don't like what exactly?

I don't really know much about taxidermy, but it's looks good! Nice deer too congrats. From what I have heard, one of the areas that may not get as much attention is around the chest area. I guess a good mount would be symmetrical shoulder to shoulder and between will be "real clean". Not sure what that completely means, but as I said it looks good.

I don't like the fact that he is on your wall and not mine!:)

I think when it comes down to todays taxi secrets you have to look at reputation vs. cost.

Most use the same techniques, some just offer it more affordably. Up and comers to the trade will do some excellent work to get more business and build that rep. Your $700 shoulder mount may be worthy of a ribbon under a microscope, but up on the wall I think you mde a good choice.

Your mount looks great to me. If you're happy with it so am I.

As said before, what really counts is do you like it? I think it looks great. I think anyone can nit pick a mount if they get up close to it. I have 3 deer mounted dating from 1997. The first deer that was mounted has a small hole on one side of the upper lip. Unless you're looking for it, you don't really notice it. My 1998 mount is falling apart in the ears, but once again, you have to get up close to really notice it. The deer I mounted last year is the one I like best. Thanks to my buddy Ohiobucks I found a great taxi and I'm really happy with the deer he mounted last year.

Thanks for the comments.

For $350.00 I'm happy with it.

One thing I wasn't sure about was the lines in the neck (muscle lines in the mold that show through). They are more visible in this mount than any other I have. I've heard that for competition taxidermists try to tone this down. I think I'd like it if they were not quite as visible. Seems like I learn something new with every mount!

BTW...

Anyone in IL or Missouri who is interested the taxidermist that did this is Mark Short of Buck Fever Taxidermy in Brighton IL. His prices are not going up this season.

No, it's the other way around. Only good taxidermists that use quality tanning services along with proper fleshing and thinning can achieve this detail only. Backyard taxidermists will never get muscle detail in their mounts. You should always see muscle detail in a mount that has a turned look.

Interesting! I'll remember that.
