randyoitker1
Thanks everyone, I appreciate all of the comments and here is my Colorado mule deer story: My first time in Colorado was quite an experience. I was hunting elk and mule deer and the caliber of animals that I was seeing was unbelievable! On my first day out, I saw this 6X2 that was huge! He was a 340 6X on one side but on the other side he had only a long spike with a 2 foot drop tine that had a big ball hanging off of the drop tine! I could not get him in bow range. The next day, too many bulls to count but no shot opportunities. There was a 5X5 in bow range and a 3X4 legal bull in bow range but after having seen the large amount of bulls earlier I thought I don't want to settle for anything small! On my last day, we called in the bull of my dreams. He was a giant 6X7 and I had him at 59 yards. Which is well within the range I had been practicing. The only problem, he was face on at me and not only face on at me but he has turned slightly with both shoulders straight at me. Trust me, don't ever shoot at one of those shoulders! I couldn't figure out why the bull had locked up.I later found out that the day before, one of the other groups in camp had shot an elk. This is where they had quartered him up and a bear had drug one of the front feet up into the trail that the bull was headed down. That is what stopped him in his tracks! He stood there smelling and then whirled and went straight back to where he had come from but what a HEART POUNDING sight! I was hunting mule deer for a couple of evenings and I had saw this 180 inch beautiful 5X6 in full velvet. But every night he outsmarted me! He kept coming out on different sides of the field. The closest I ranged him was 162 yards. One night he bedded down in the field in front of me for over an hour at about 200 yards out. Then I was totally blown away. Jeff, the outfitter came and got me and he said we need to go over to the other side of the berm. He said that he had seen 3 mule deer over there and all were over 200 inches. We went to the other side and I had one of the giants within range at 70 yards but there was not enough camera light left for filming. They went right by the blind that I had been sitting in the first night. So, the next night, that is right where I was sitting, in that blind! I was sitting in the blind and didn't think any thing was going to show up when all of a sudden, here they come! The first big mule deer that came by was the one that I shot. What was ironic was two of the giants were coming down the hill behind him. The outfitter,Jeff was set up about 1000 yards from where I was, watching with binoculars and after he saw me shoot my mule deer he came up to where I was and said that there were 2 big boys behind him! The only thing that we will never know is whether they would have come by the blind like the other one did and still have enough light to shoot. I am very happy with the mule deer that I did shoot. I am definitely going to make the Louisiana Purchase ranch a yearly hunting destination. I was there to do video and basically to help Jeff and Rick Tingle ( the owner) but next year I am going to do some very serious hunting!
