Going to try the Savage again.......

A few days have passed since shooting this new 308 Win for the 1st time. Results were less than spectacular with the best five shot groups measuring right at an inch. I pulled the stock and skim bedded the aluminum "v" block and back of the recoil lug hoping this will help. While I had the stock off I decided to change colors of the A5 style Choate stock and added some texture in the grip and forend.

I will try some more loads through it today and in the next couple of days. If it doesnt show any promise the barrel will become a 20 incher by next week and I'll start again.

Nice work. I bet you make a shooter out of it yet.:)

"Some" Savage rifles take a bit of a break in before they start shooting well.

Heck, every rifle I own I run a long string thru them one time... cook the barrel a bit- just to destress the metal.

Seems to work fine.

Yeah... that rifle looks like some serious work/time was put into it. She'll do you well. just going to take some tlc to get there.

Texastrophies, that one is made by Manfrotto, I have another one that is marked Swarovski but's it's identical to the one pictured. The pistol grip ball mount is also Manfrotto. They're solid tripods that I have no complaints about, though a bit heavy.

On another note my brake didnt show up today so I hopefully it will be Monday. I am holding off cutting the barrel until it gets here as I want to have it on hand when I cut the threads so it can be timed.

You cutting threads by hand or on a lathe??

I have access at work to a full machine shop, as well as a very gifted machinist. He's somewhat concerned that the straight jaws of the lathe and the tapered barrel aren't going to work very well together. Any ideas?

also...........

What type of brake are you fond of?? I'm looking at braking a 7mm for my wife to shoot and really like what I have read about the Defensive Edge brakes. Any suggestions?

JJL, I am not a pro by any means, just like to tinker is all. I typically will use a 4 jaw chuck, steady rest and get the barrel indicated by using a PTG range rod, this insures that everything will be concentric with the bore and not the OD of the barrel.

I am not familular with the Defensive Edge brake, on this barrel I am using a Badger Ordnance FTE. It's only ported on the sides making shooting prone easier without kicking up debris.
