m gardner
Sharpen a Montec. Hmmm. I sharpen them right out of the package so they are razorsharp. The 60 degree angle they have is okay for penetrating and breaking bone but cannot be brought to a razor's edge. I do the back 2/3's of the blade this way and leave the rugged 60 degree angle up front to take abuse. I made a scraper from carbide to do this with.(actually I had to make 4 because friends like to steal them!) I resharpen the back 2/3's of the blade to a 30 degree angle then take off the wire edge by gently scraping both sides. I just sent one through a large mulie and he died within 30 yards. Blood just shot out the hole. It broke a rib going in and went through the shoulder on the opposite side, but not through the skin. 355 grain arrow and 58 pound bow. Sharpening steel isn't a skill everyone has these days. You'll need to practice. Get some bandaids. :DTo sharpen them acceptably you can just use a medium stone and work them side to side. Not lengthwise. You can put some magic marker on them and when it disappers you're done. Just keep trying you'll eventually get it.Mark

Rhino
Al...I start off using the Montec stone to get it close to being sharp (pushing the broadhead away). When I get them fairly close I switch to a ceramic sharpener to get them that much closer (pushing away too). To finish them off I use leather (pulling them toward you) to polish them to the razor edge you're talking about. I use this process on both G5's and the Wensel Woodsman broadheads I use with my recurve. The Razorcap broadhead is an offshoot of the Woodsman using the same basic design modified to be a lighter broadhead for compound bows.
