Stinger-Hunter
I read some research, I believe it was in the book, "In Defense of Hunting" which stated that many top psychologists noticed a trend that many Hunters have participated in martial arts of some kind. Having been involved on-and-off since I was 16 (Tae Kwon Do, Shorin ryu, kickboxing, boxing) - I'm curious if anyone here has also. If so, when, how long, what style? sluggunner
It makes sense. I have never participated in the martial arts, but it makes perfect sense as both activities require great amounts of discipline and self control as well as a formal structured process to get the job done right. Yeah we call that just a sumo stance. Similar to kiba dachi, aka horse stance. Feet are a little different.
Stinger-Hunter
So I'm going to guess that the research is generally true. Nice to see that. It may also help anyone to think twice before picking that fight with the guy that is in your treestand. Would be funny to see a kung fu fight in the middle of the forest though. Tominator
I used to put a pretty good smackdown on my brothers growing up, but never formal martial arts training.
Hoosierbuck
Spent a little time BC (before children) studying Okinawan Shorin ryu- Matsubayashi and Kobayashi styles. (Spelling might not be right on those.) HB
wtnhunt
Long time ago(over 25 years ago) back when I was in junior high school, took shaolin kempo karate classes for nearly 2 years. Took a few taekwando lessons as well. Don't really see any correlation with that to hunting though since I was really not too interested in hunting yet at that time in my life. OUTSIDER
I did Karate and Jujitsu when i was a kid for someyears, got out of it because of a bad experience, took it up again in my late teen years, got into it heavily while in the military, trained with the marines and army while stationed in DC, Love it, love to hunt, love to fish. My dad was pretty good at judo back in his 20's while in the army/vietnam.
layin on the smackdown
If watching the Karate Kid over and over, and running around your front yard like a ninja constitutes practicing martial arts, then yes, i am a 7th degree black belt... Rhino
I was a big Bruce Lee fan when I was growing up, but never participated in any formal martial arts training. I kicked a few things around thanks to him though.
GWSmith
In all seriousness...there may very well be a correlation with martial arts between those people who are pre-disposed to having more determination, self-discipline, and patience than the average person. Those sound alot like the attributes of someone involved in martial arts. Those who have not taken any formal classes probably would have felt very comfortable taking them. Stinger-Hunter
BJJ,mt and boxing. I would say the book you are referencing is wrong. There is no way to know, but the psychologists were Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud. The book that stated this correlation was "In Defense of Hunting." Good read and makes a lot of counter arguments to the traditional anti-hunter theories of hunters.
JackedUpZ71
I wrestled all through high school. Not quite the same as martial arts I don't guess, but what I learned has helped me out of a few sticky situations since.
