Buck Fever......What's that???

Well folks, bow season opened up this morning here in Wisconsin a few hours ago, and I'm already done :) I got out to the stand about 6:15 this morning and got situated. It was still sort of dark and I could hear a wolf howling not far from my stand. 5 minutes later I saw him come strolling through the field about 35 yds out. I thought "you little bugger, get outta here" and he kept on going into the woods, followed by 1 more wolf.

I had a video camera set up in the tree that I just had to put the battery in and it would be ready to shoot, like me, but for some reason it would not work. Slightly disappointed I quickly forgot about the camera and focused on what I was supposed to be doing.....NOTHING. The tree I was in was very small and sorta shaky, any movement I made would send the tree swaying, and there was no wind this morning so I had to make sure I wasn't the lonesome tree swaying in the non-existent wind LOL So I sat, and shortly after sun rise I heard footsteps to my right. I was looking out over the alfalfa field and didn't want to move at all so I did not look at the noise, it was a couple minutes later when I heard a lot more noise and I decided to look and see an older fawn and big doe running away into the woods.

Probably 15 minutes later I spotted a doe walking across the field towards me, for some reason she stopped right after she got to my side of the field and just stared at the tree line I was on. From the corner of my left eye I could see some movement, I thought it was a turkey and proceeded to watch the doe, not very long after the movement I thought was a turkey turned to face the treeline I was on and I turned my head just enough to spot the rear end of a deer. I was able to peek through the trees and branches just enough to see a rack on the deer and whisper to myself "it's a buck, it's a buck, it's a buck, it's a buck" I might have been saying it in my head, I'm not too sure, but anyways the buck turned 180 degrees and faced out toward the middle of the field at the doe and I did what I knew instinctively to do, drew back on my Martin Magnum Tracer with RAGE 2blade arrow. It was only about 10 seconds before he turned towards me and took a few more steps closer then went broadside and finally quartered away ever so slightly....THWACK!

I knew instantly it was a good hit and a clean pass through. He trotted about 45 yards away towards the wood-line and stopped to look back at the doe one last time, wobbled a bit and dropped right there.

Long story short, I walked up to the house, got Ashley and went back down to the sight of the hunt and waited for Martin to come by with the 4-wheeler (i had to honk my car horn to get him off his stand) On the way back down Ashley and I saw a wolf in the middle of the field, no doubt looking for the dead deer a mere 100 yds away. We scared him off and Martin showed up for pictures and to show me how to field dress the deer, being the first deer I'd ever shot i didn't know much about the next step.

We got him all registered and then skinned and ready for a plaque mount and even cut off a little bit of loin to fry up for breakfast. If it weren't for Martin and his wife Kim, I would not have been able to enjoy or partake in this truly awesome experience. Thank you both very much and god bless both of your hearts.

If one looks closely, you can still see a little string of velvet left at his base, he just lost it the last day or so. This just goes to show you that practice, being still, and having patience, waiting out the shot pays off. Great story Andy..text book shot placement, and breakfast never tasted so good!!Congrats on your very first ever buck!:toot:

Sorry about the "DATE" on the camera...we changed out the battery and forgot to update the correct date

Good job baby :) I'm proud of you and glad you finally got your chance to get the deer you've been after! It's an awesome feeling, isn't it? That's a great first buck, and probably bigger than some guys are ever going to shoot in their lifetime. You picked a good one! It's bigger than my first buck was ;)
