Re: elephant with bow??

Seems all the elephant hunts I have seen there have always been backup shooters with rifles. Think even Ted Nugent when he shot an elephant on his show, the backup shooter also shot at just about the same time.

Dont recall ever seeing an elephant hunt with a bow, but sure they have backup shooters armed with rifles just as do the rifle hunters.

Re: elephant with bow??

OK...so you shoot the elephant with a bow. Then what? Do you eat them????? Not trying to be funny, but what do you do with them? I don't think I've ever seen an elephant mount.

[ QUOTE ]

By the way, when did Chuck Adams go over and attempt this feat? I'm just curious because I have never heard anything about it and I have read a lot of his material

[/ QUOTE ]

Hey PA bowhunter, let me get back to you on this, I would have to go try and find in the book I have.

[ QUOTE ]

I mean, o.k., Chuck Adams went over to Africa and found it impossible, that's wonderful. But apparently a lot of archers disagree and have plenty of pictures to prove it. Is Chuck Adams a well respected name, of course, does he know it all, NOPE!

[/ QUOTE ]

And also I didn't say that Chuck Adams said it was impossible to KILL an Elephant with a bow, I just said that he said it was nearly impossible to make an ETHICAL shot, which means that MOST of the shots would be considered bad shots because of the huge rib bones.

Re: elephant with bow??

Hey PAbowhunteer, I consulted back to my LIFE AT FULL DRAW book. Chuck Adams did this in 1992. His bow setup was a 100lb. Hoyt Super Slam bow with a custom 830 grain arrow (16" of 2117 arrow epoxied inside of a full length 2317 arrow). The arrow was tipped with a Zwickey Black Diamond broadhead. The bow was generating nearly 90 foot pounds of kinetic energy.

Here is a quote on the results of a penetration test directly from the book:

"To make a long story short, when I hit between the ribs during the test shots my arrow disappeared in the elephant. When I hit a rib dead-center it would just go 'thunk' and go inabout 2 inches through the hide and muscle and stop in rib."

"...I figured the about 30 percent of the actual chest cavity was soft tissue exposed and 70 percent was solid rib. So I figured if you had three elephant tags, you'd probably hit between the ribs one time and kill the elephant, The other two time you'd probably have trouble. ..."

"I'm sad that I didn't get an elephant cleanly, but I can tell you that I'd never hunt elephant again because my recommendations to the Zimbabwe government was that it was a one-in-three chance. I had the pictures to back it up. I have the whole rib panel of that elephant at home on the wall. I brought all the ribs back and reconstructed the rib panel, and you can clearly see that a strong two-thirds of the chest cavity is cobered by ribs so thick, you couldn't shoot an arrow through those ribs. So I recommended to Zimbabwe that it's a stunt and really shouldn't be done. It's too risky -- risky for the personell who are with you, risky for you, not fair to the animal. And that was my recommendation."

Now, before anyone comes on and tries to argue against this just because more elephants have been taken since 1992, check to see if any of those elephants were taken WITHOUT the extra shot from a firearm. Chuck's elephant was taken down with an extra shot from a .458 Winchester.

P.S. For anyone that was wanting to get this book to read or to see about this topic in the book, I was wrong about it being written by Chuck Adams. It was a Biography of Chuck Adams wrote by Gregg Gutschow.

Re: elephant with bow??

At the lone star brewery hall of horns in San Antonio Tx there is several elephant tusks and skulls that were killed by bowhunters. I believe Howard Hills bull, his recurve, and the arrow used are all on diplay at the museum. I also know that Tink Nathan has taken several elephant with a bow and Jack Brittingham has also taken elephants with a bow. If you go to Jacks website you can read his day by day report of the hunts.
