stick
This morning I got my first Elk, Right at daylight I called in a 4x4 bull and he had 6 cows with him. When I finally got a shot at the first cow I saw the bull was only about 10 feet away from me. The cow that I shot turned out to be a calf and she had crashed about 50yards from the road. Since I was only hunting about ten minutes from my house I went back home and got the wife and Kids and Got some pics. Even though I only got a calf I am really pumped and Excited since I have been hunting elk for 3 years and this is hte first shot that I have had. Prairiepredator
Congatulations on your first elk! Wether it is a cow or a bull, the most important thing is that you had a good time in the outdoors. I have always wanted to go elk hunting, but I am not as lucky as you to elk right close to home. But good job on your first elk, and hope you keep having success down the road.

Adjam5
Do not belittle your kill by saying it was ONLY a calf. If you are happy with it, that is all that matters. It was legal right? Every harvest is a trophy in my eyes. You did everything right to make the kill happen. How many hunt and go home without an animal? Many. Congrats on your Elk and enjoy that OH so tender meat . Very cool for getting the family out there to share the moment.
Muleyman
Congrats!! That must have been some feeling taking down your first elk. Hunting is'nt about the trophy. That memory will be with you for ever.

Hoosierbuck
The only downside to shooting a calf is that you will run out of that awesome meat sooner than later. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! Congrats! HB
