What was the problem with the buttstock retention? I have 4 Handi or Pardner guns with wood stocks and never had a problem.

Perhaps, but I'd lean more towards the gun getting dry fired as to the leading cause of firing pin spring failure in the Encores. That little conical spring is bound to hang up if the firing pin is allowed to travel beyond it's normal range.

nef makes some good guns and will work for you for sure. i have shot other calibers but haven't shot the 50 cal yet but i woould imagine if they make it they know it will shoot just fine and i would suggest asking nef what they tested their black powders with that will usually give you a start on which loads to use
