jesse8953
I got a t/c omega with a nikon bdc scope.I use 150 gr. 777 powder {3 pellets} and t/c 250 gr. superglide shockwaves.I like the pre- saturated cleaning patches. No mess and great for sighting in a scope.I cleaned mine every other shot because it was hard to load if you didn't.You might have to play with loads to get the pattern you want. You will get a lot of different openions on what ml to buy.My suggestion is to go to a hunting shop and see what feels right to you.Good luck on your disition. Hoytguy
Thank You Jesse for the reply. This is going to be a learning experience for me. I've reloaded for my shotguns and hand guns. But this is different than that but then very similar. I'm just trying to absorb everything I can. Sabot, Powerbelt, Powder, Pelets, Measure, Clean, Patch, Lube................Stop The Insanity !!! I'm having a meltdown !! I'm off to the Reno Scheels tomorrow and i'm leaving with one thing...a headache. I'm going to find their Black Powder guy and say..."Teach Me" !! Hoytguy
BTW...I printed off Bluelk's sticky to read on the way to Reno. There is alot of info there. I can only admit... ....I was a member of Realtree Forum's when there wasn't alot of members. I think this is my 3rd. username. My original name was Pretorian. I remember when the Monarch "Bluelk" was still with us sharing his campfire. I can humbly say "i waited too long". The information he could have shared with me would have been endless. Not enough wood for that campfire. What everyone has learned from him, i'm counting on you to pass along to me. So, to all my "Smoke Pole" Bloodbrothers...Thanks in advance for any info you may have for me.
Hoosierbuck
It seems overwhelming at first, as you can see, but it really isn't that hard. When you buy one it will come with a DVD. The two you are considering are pretty popular, and get pretty high marks for user-friendly. I'll write more when I get a chance... Good luck! jokostel
Ive been using the ol Encore 209x50 stainless. 120 grains of FF grade 777. (FFF is made for pistol use--- BUT you CAN use it in the rifle, it will burn cleaner. Just limit your charge to 100 or 120grains.) I either use powerbelt 295s or Hornady SST 300 grain sabots- usually the Hornadys for the first shot, and the powerbelts for secondary shots, as they are easier to run down the pipe in the heat of the moment. For primers--- I don't listen to the hype. YOU DO NOT need a special 209 primer. Black powder and subsitutes are VERY easy to ignite... simply don't require anything more than your standard run of the mill cci 209M. For cleaning/storage, TC makes a bore butter that is phenominal... and they also make a few cleaning solvents. DO NOT USE petroleum based cleaners or oil in the bore- unless you want to store for a LONG time. Oil destroys the blackpowder and it will make it VERY difficult to ignite. IowaDeerHunter
We have the encore, prohunter and triumph, and our favorite is the encore....hands down. It shoots just as accurate as the prohunter. The triumph, well we would not get another one, we would just get a encore instead. The trigger on he triumph is so HARD it is crazy. Now some people have had this problem and some people have not, if you do you can send it in. The trigger on the encore is the ultimate, that is one of the reasons why we like that gun best. For powder, I would highly recommend Blackhorn 209. We used to shoot 777 pellets because they were easy and convenient. We never really shot very good groups with it, I mean we were happy with something like a 5 inch group at 100 yards (which is bad) but we really did not know it at the time because we were also new to muzzleloading. Finally after I missed a 170 last year at 140 yards we decided it was time to get rid of the crap and try something different. So we tried this new blackhorn stuff....simply amazing....it is loose powder but it actually is not a hassle at all and takes no time to measure and load. The stuff is accurate to, we are now shooting nearly touching groups at a hundred yards. The best part is that there is no cleaning between shots. We would shoot 15-20 shots without cleaning and the first was just as accurate as the last! With 777 we were cleaning between every shot and that gets old, especially when it is freezing cold out. hammerforged
I've got a CVA Kodiak Magnum in 45 and stainless. I shoot the Blackhorn 209 as well and it is fantastic, 15 shots with no cleaning between shots and just as accurate on the last shot as the first. Hoytguy
Ever bit of extra info is apreciated. Thanks guys !! I did go to Scheels yesterday and lived in the Black powder section for an hour. Of course the guy working there was trying to talk me into an old hawken style rifle.......you bet. Bullet weight and powder grain charts is what i'm looking or now. I want to keep the bullet weight rather light. Let's say right around 230 grains. What would be a good powder charge with the Blackhorn 209 powder ??
browtine2
I also shoot the Encore, hard to beat, I shoot the Blackhorn 209 behind a Harvester Scorpion in the crush rib sabot. These bullets push as easy as anything and the guys are right Blackhorn 209 is the cleanest burning by far, I've tried them all loose and pellets.
