Ghilliesuit22
My folks just moved to Summers County, West Virginia which is in the southern part of the state. I was just curious when is the rut season down there? Is it in late October? Early November? Dates would kind of be nice. Thanks
OUTSIDER
Last week of oct, first two of november most years, then there is spotty activity throughout late nov. I am from putnam county, which is in the middle western part of the state, but its basically the same everywhere...
Ghilliesuit22
Thanks...Sounds like the same as Michigan's. I saw a lot of deer down there but they did seem a lot smaller than Michigans body wise. What is the average healthy buck/doe weight? Thanks
GWSmith
What activity I have seen up in Harrison and Barbour counties have been mostly the 2 weeks before ThanksGiving Week(mid November)...the last two weeks of Bow Hunting season. I have seen bucks tending does as late as the Saturday after ThanksGiving though.

GWSmith
I'm usually headed back home that day after a great week or two down there... Been hunting at the same place since 1998.
Ghilliesuit22
So that is where you spend your bow season? I take it you buy non-resident tags or how does that work?
bghunter777
I live in Pa put recently started hunting in Braxton county WV I have hunted in several different parts of the state in the past seems to be similar to pa last week in oct and first two in November although we have taken deer chasing does in Rifle season which is ussually the last or next to last week of November. Remember the Rut is long not a flash in the pan if i had to pick one week though i would say start about the 5th of November! Personally though I prefer the last week in October for Pa and WV the bigger bucks are not chasing and still in there core areas but seem to move before dark more often and respond well to calls. GWSmith
So that is where you spend your bow season? I take it you buy non-resident tags or how does that work? Some years I'm able to get down there for the last week or two of Bow season. Every year though I've been down there for the rifle opening week. I'll be at the Walmart in Clarksburg, WV. buying my Out Of State license and Extra over the counter doe tags most of the time on Saturday afternoon before ThanksGiving. Like most people I have a favorite place in the world. Mine just happens to be in West Virginia in a treestand on the trees in the center of this picture below: I was standing here when I took the Pic... Here's a better pic that shows more detail... GWSmith
I've been in that Wal-Mart buying my license several times, myself............only in April. Totally different animal the weekend before ThanksGiving:clown: You would think their giving away Money with the lines at the sporting goods counter. Theres always 4-5 people who are doing nothing but selling hunting licenses. It's actually a beautiful thing seeing "Hunting" being celebrated the way it's done down there!
