quigleysharps4570
I used 80gr pyrodex rs and a .530 round ball on a cow elk at 140 yards. Shattered both lungs and she only went 60 yards with an excellent blood trail. I plan on hunting strictly with patched round ball in the next year or two and filming all of the hunts and documenting each kill with a patched round ball. That's what I was talking about...anyone who's ever hunted with patched roundball knows better than to believe any writer who says it's a poor performer. Sure can't ask for any better than it did on your elk.
Grady269
Precision Rifle I have been very dedicated to Barnes MZ bullets. This weekend I took out the Encore and did a quick check before the season starts. I had some Precision Rifle Bullets 250Gr that I thought I would give a try as well. WOW! First (2) went through the same hole @ 100 yds. I tried it again and all 4 shots were @ minimum touching the same original hole @ 100 yds. I have shot a bunch of muzzle loader bullets; none of them shot anything like this.

Buckeye54
.40 cal 240 gr PR Dead Center. They shoot great out of my Traditions Pursuit XLT. BTW, I used to shoot a .49 180 gr patched round ball out of my Hawken and it did a fine job on deer. Two does I remember it knocked over on the spot. Just couldn't shoot 150 yds with it. 45-70cannon
Only got one inline and that one takes the TC 240 grain sabot. All the rest of the guns (7) take a patched round ball and they kill out past 100 yards and I got no complaints at all!
hunter109
thats cool well i will see you all on the contest borad when i kill that big one this year
Jeramie
The Hornady is a good sabot. They seem to shoot good out of my CVA Optima. However, I actually shoot the cheap TC's from Walmart. Those things are just as accurate as anything and have killed my deer just as dead....
just-an-illusion
I used to shoot 245gr powerbelt aero tips ahead of 150 grains if pyrodex pellets, but am switching to 300gr 44cal Hornady XTPs this year. I am also switching to loose powder so that i can play with the charge a little more. I never killed a deer with the powerbelts, but after reading some of the reviews I didnt want to experence what i was reading. Hopefully Ill get to report back on the Hornadys in a couple of weeks. hoosierhunter
I've done some testing with powerbelts with 100 grains of powder and I got literally no expansion. I pulled the bullets out of the oak tree and I almost could shoot them again. I actually took the bullets to a gander mountain to display them. This all occured b/c I watched a buddy lose a deer and we stumble across another one b/c they weren't bleeding.

Especially with the 245/295gr powerbelt.

quigleysharps4570
Me to,wouldnt have it any other way. Nor I. No plastic fouling, no swabbing in between shots to get some certain brand to shoot, etc., etc. A patched roundball has been killing critters for many years around this place and I see no reason to change things. WhiteSmoke
What kind of bullets do I use? My favorite bullet is the T/C Maxi-Hunter, a big, full-bore, pure lead slug. I use two others, depending on where and what I'm hunting. One is a Hornady HP/XTP and the other is a Barnes Expander MZ. Both of these are available in 250 and 300-grain versions. brad dryden
I use the powerbelts. Their for a LONG time I was stingy and always used the loose powder and people talked about using pellets and looking at the price difference I was like heck no. Well last year I broke down and bought some and like them alot better. Not saying the loose powder is bad. Just seemed like I was getting more accurate shots and consistent.
