Turkeygirl
Well not something that anyone wants to do...but it was necessary. A neighbor called us, my sister answered. Apparently a deer had been hit on our road. The neighbor hadb een walking and saw it struggling. So I dressed, got my sister, and my knife, and we drove over to the neighbor's. One other time they called us, when they hit a deer, and we took care of that one. I know, maybe you are suppose to called an ECO or whatever, but when it comes to suffering, my heart goes out and it needs to be ended quickly. So we followed the neighbor to where it was, which was actually only a couple hundred yards up the road from our house. It was a doe fawn, was hit in the back end...couldn't move it's back legs, broken above the one ankle...My sister, and good job to her because this was a first for her, held it down and I took out my Buck knife and cut it's throat. It rips at your heart, sitting there, holding down a dying animal like that, and the warm blood spraying onto your hand. It's different from hunting in a way... I prayed for God to take her quickly. When she was dead, we then carried her across the road and into a bunch of tall weeds, where no one could see her (aka grossed out or whatever)....and there's usually a fox den in that spot somewhere...so she'll a good meal. It's one of those things you know....I'm glad we could go end her suffering though, otherwise who knows how long she'd have been there. Just hard to do...but at the moment, I knew it had to be done, I didn't hesistate, and my sister was great holding it down. I dunno if I should have called an ECO or not...who knows, by the time one would have gotten there..but in my mind, it was the right thing to do, just go end her suffering...I don't really feel like any "law" was broken. Besides, in our eyes, it's one of God's animals, so when yo look at it from a Christian perspective...I guess that's why my heart is how it is..they still deserve respect. Ok, sorry for the long rant. Going to go shower now.
Doe-ee
Good for you Ruth. It's got to be a hard thing to do but knowing you only ended it's suffering has got to comfort you some.
coles
I dont know too many girls that could do that. There needs to be more like you around. I hate cutting their throat also. Ive had to do it a couple times and it just kills me to do it. But up here in MT, if Myself or someone hits a deer and it is struggling in the road it is illegal to shoot it to put it down. you have to cut its throat. A guy i know told me he hit a whitetail doe and didnt kill it so he got out and shot it with his 22 and right as he was getting back in his truck game warden drove up and gave him a ticket. Said it was same as poaching, but you can cut its throat without getting in trouble. Doesnt make sense to me.
Adjam5
Compassion is a big part of what hunters are all about Ruth. I think you did the right thing, waiting on a ECO would have taken hours. Could the sheriff's dept have issued a carcass' tag to take some meat home? buckee
That's always sad. I would have done the same thing as you did Ruth, and all for the same reasons. Ya done good

RangerClay
Good job Ruth. Maybe next time just take a .22 and shoot it in the ear. It will cleaner and less dramatic for your sister and yourself.
buckee
Maybe next time just take a .22 and shoot it in the ear. It will cleaner and less dramatic for your sister and yourself. Hunt or be Hunted
Ruth you did the right thing. i would have done the same as you, and like some said there's not many girls like you that can do that. way to go Ruth.
Turkeygirl
Yeah, I thought about taking the .22...but being by the side of the road and what not...I figured why risk it, just do it with the knife...It had to be done... Yeah, I kinda thought to myself "Huh...wonder how many other girls could do what we just did?" lol Ah well...it's not suffering so that's the good news...and it won't go to waste, at least the wildlife will have it. stevebeilgard
Yeah...but How is that going to kill the deer? now that's funny right there... you did great, ruth. i know it's illegal just like it is in wyoming, but i've done the same because it's the right thing to do. woolybear
You're a ballsy chick Ruth, not sure I could have done that. Carefull on how long your blade is. If I remember correctly in NY you are only allowed to carry 4"er on your personal buggy before it becomes carry of an illegal weapon:death:. In that case you may as well had taken the .22 if a trooper's having a bad day and rolls up on ya in the act. Heck I got hassled one time for having a tire iron on the back seat as a dispatch tool.:nono: Who woulda thunk something that comes with the truck is considered an illegal weapon if not in it's propper spot. Just sayin'.
Norm Sauceman
I have had to put several deer, dogs and many other animals out of their misery. We are allowed to carry guns here so I was able to put a 45 in the temple and do it real fast. Did have to do it with a knife once and it did not take long either. Good job

sluggunner
Great job! You did the right thing. Do not second guess your decision. Sometimes the moral thing to do is outside what the techniacal "legal" thing is to do. You should be proud of yourself.
RangerClay
Yeah...but How is that going to kill the deer? You're just jealous because she got to cut a deer with a buck knife and you couldn't be part of it!

ruttinbuc
I have done the same thing a couple times, TG. You did the right thing. No need to have the critter suffer for as long as to roll out the red tape of the authority. Ya, not many girls would do that, but we know our Ruth will! Bowtech_archer07
IMO Ruth, you did the right thing. The poor animal was suffering and we as hunters do our best to prevent that when we can, all the time. We practice and practice and practice to make sure we can make the shots when they are presented to us so we can put down the animal we are attempting to harvest as quickly and humanely as possible. In the eyes of the state you might have broken the law, but you definitely did the most ethical thing.
