Muleyman
Hi. Me, my Dad, and my brother are planning on going black bear hunting in northern Saskatchewan this spring. I am using the 85 grain G5 montecs and shooting 45 pounds. I was just wondering if they would take down a black bear good enough and have enough penetration. If not, what would any of you recommend? MNcrittergittr
G5 montecs are nice broadheads. I know a few guys that love them. I'm a muzzy man, I've shot all kinds of muzzy broadheads and prefer the 4 blades. Recently I started shooting the muzzy mx-4's, and love them! They are my new favorite. I don't have a lot of experience hunting with broadheads under 100 gr, but a few seasons ago my buddy's little brother shot his first bear with a bow, he was shooting a 100 gr 4 blade muzzy at 50 pounds. He took a nice quartering away shot and the arrow stuck in the far shoulder. It wasn't a complete pass through, but a definitely well placed, good killing shot. PotashRLS
I think at 45-60lbs a good cut on impact head will yield the penetration you want on a bear. I personally would not shoot a bear with a chisel type head behind a 45lb bow. It would probably work just fine, but there others out there that I would prefer over it. Bears are nutorious for being bad bleeders so perfect shot placement doesn't always give a lot of blood on the ground. Make sure your bow/arrow/broadhead combination is enough for these tough critters.
Muleyman
Thanks for the help. They would probably work fine but I want to be sure. I was considering muzzy. My brother is a big muzzy fan. Thanks
stcif
How heavy is your arrow and broadhead combo? And what speed is it going?
Muleyman
Well my bow is rated at 280fps so I would say I am shooting about 240fps. My arrows are 7.3 grains per inch and my arrows are 23.5 inches long, so that is 171.5+85 grain broadheads is 256.5. So about 240fps and 256.5 grain arrows. Muleyman
If I switched to 100 grain my arrow plus broadhead would weigh 271.5.
bghunter777
Rage 2 blade or 40Ke. also Rocket steelheads are still awesome heads
m gardner
Your setup will be fine. Montecs work well on anything. I saw a bull elk my friend's wife shot with one out of a 40 pound Browning bow and it went in on the last rib and barely stuck out the hide on the brisket. It's hard to get penetration like that on an elk. You'll be fine. Mark
Dakota
Montecs, Rage 2s, Magnus Stingers and Muzzy's are just a few of several broadheads that would definitely do the job on a black bear. Dakota

8ptbuckpa
Your Setup wull definately work for yah... just put the arrow where it needs to be and listen for the death moan!! Agreed, i used those broadheads on my bearhunt, but just to pass along what i was told from the folks at G5 since most bear shots are not over 40 yards, they recommend the striker magnums, there razor sharp and have a 1.5 inch cutting diameter, I was just to cheap to buy new ones lol btw the new tekans are sweeet
Muleyman
Thanks. But i am only using 100 grain and the striker magnums some in 125 so I couldn't use them.
