Love my .17HMR!!!!!!

Got a Marlin Model 917V bolt action with 7 round clip chambered in .17HMR topped it with a 3-9X32. Sighted it in at 60 yrds yesterday and this thing will drive tacks. I think this gun is the most fun to shoot out of anything that I own. Shot one squirrel on the way out of the wood at about 50 yards. First shot he was on the run down a limb quartering away from me. It caught in in the stomach and his internals fell out second shot was broadside right behind his front arm. Looked like you took a pair of scissors and cut out his chest cavity. Looking forward to shooting a yote with it.

Re: Love my .17HMR!!!!!!

Mine is the Marlin 917VS, and I love it, too! With a good,

steady rest, squirrels just lose their heads @ 100yds.

While a little expensive for plinking, I still like how it will

pop a sparrow into a small feather cloud at 50yds. Awhile

back, it bagged a crow at 165 yds. Don't believe I'll ever

go back to another rimfire. grin.gif

I just had a CZ 452 Varmint follow me home this afternoon. I thought about one and went to see my local dealer. Low and behold he had one in stock.

I am seriously thinking about buying a CZ-452 in .17 HM-2. These shells are a bit less expensive then .17 HMR's, and aren't as destructive on Squirrels.

Re: Love my .17HMR!!!!!!

I haven't shot one yet, but from the opinions of the guys on www.rimfirecentral.com, the hm2 performs better than a .22LR but not nearly as well as a hmr. And while the bullets are expensive, why not pay a couple of dollars more and get a lot more performance? And as far as squirrel destruction, why does it matter if you blow the head off, which you will be able to do a lot more often with the hmr?

Re: Love my .17HMR!!!!!!

Either of the .17 rimfire cartridges will never replace the .22 lr. They shoot flatter and all that but they will never be as cheap to shoot. You can still shoot a .22 lr all day for what a couple boxes of .17 rimfire will cost. Personally, I don't see the niche of the 17M2.

Re: Love my .17HMR!!!!!!

To each his own, but the extra performance of the HMR

over the M2 is worth it to me. Head shots @ 100yds are

no problem for the HMR. Dunno about the M2, but the

trajectory CANNOT possibly be there as the HMR is. And

it's doubtful that a body shot @ 150yds with the HMR will

do little more damage than the M2 @ 50yds. How well

can the M2 do @ 150yds.? The HMR does VERY WELL

at that range.

I certainly HOPE neither of these two cartridges take

over either the LR or MAG niche! Hopefully, they will

only add to, and not take away from, rimfire shooting!

Re: Love my .17HMR!!!!!!

It depends on what the shooter is looking for. The 17M2 is 450 fps slower than the HMR. This will not destroy edible parts of small game as much. Granted head shots are dramatic, but not always possible. It will still shoot flatter than the .22 version, and should be adequate for small game to 100 yards.

Dan,

The reason, I am considering a .17 Mach-2 is due to the fact that in the area I live our population (people) is high, and while I live in the county, urban spraw is making it dangerious to use a .22 LR or .22 Mag for hunting Squirrels or other varmints. Also if I choose to use a .17 Rimfire for Squirrels, my shots average 20 to 35 yards at the most. I thought maybe the .17 Mach-2 would be less destructive on Squirrels. I also plan to shoot Starlings with it too.

Re: Love my .17HMR!!!!!!

My brother bought a .17 HMR (same as yours huchies) this year and the thing is very accurate. His gun is sighted in at 50 yards and it is also dead on at 100 yards.

Not knowing the power of this round he took it squirrel hunting this year and when he shot a red squirrel in the head, the head came clean off. We never found the head.

He also nearly blew a few gray squirrels in half with the thing.

After this he is going to buy a .22 long rifle for squirrels and save the .17 for varmint hunting.
