lil hunter
Re: Love my .17HMR!!!!!! I've heard of several coyotes being killed with 17hmr's. I haven't had the oppertunity to try it yet though.
AJ
Re: Love my .17HMR!!!!!! [ QUOTE ] Is the .17 big enough for coyotes? [/ QUOTE ] Bullet placement is critical, and it needs to be at moderate distances, but it is working. The CCI TNT bullets are better designed for penetration than the V-Max. It will still have rapid enough expansion to insure quick incapacation.
spyderpancake
Re: Love my .17HMR!!!!!! Yes, with the right shot placement. If you want to minimize meat damage, use the CCI TNT hollow-point instead of any of the ballistic tips. They still do a good job, but they aren't quite as explosive as the others, like AJ said. Head shots with the CCI's don't behead squirrels like v-max's I shot two yesterday with the Remingtons and was satisfied with the results With a gun as accurate as a .17hmr, there should be few body shots. slugshooter
Re: Love my .17HMR!!!!!! Not sure if you guys will believe this or not, but in the weekly casts and blasts section of the paper about a month ago there was a story about a guy who took his 6 year old hunting with him, let the kid hunt, well, they got him a little single shot .17 HMR and made the kid practice with it till he could get it in the bullseye. They went out and were sitting in the stand, long story short the kid took a shot at a Doe, hit her in the neck with the .17 HMR and she dropped right there. I don't know if any of you guys have heard about a deer being taken with a .17, but, I guess if you hit em right in the spinal column it wouldn't be a problem. OJR
Re: Love my .17HMR!!!!!! That is the height of stupidity to use that small of a caliber on a deer. All I can say is that they were lucky the deer dropped because all the rest of the time you would have a wounded deer!
hutchies
Re: Love my .17HMR!!!!!! That is what I told the guy that told me about it. It was a guy that worked at wal-mart that was telling me about it. He said his friend that did it is a total bonehead.

AJ
Re: Love my .17HMR!!!!!! That idiot is totally irresponsible. One for trying a .17 HMR on a deer and two for letting a 6 year old shoot at big game. I sure hope his kid did not get his common sence genes. slugshooter
Re: Love my .17HMR!!!!!! Apparently here in NC it is legal to use one on a deer, I didn't agree with it much less agree with a kid that young shooting at a deer, according to the column his dad made him practice with it till he could consistently get near the bullseye or right on, but, still, shooting at paper is a lot different than an animal, plus, still think he was too young, I'll try and find the story on-line. AJ
Re: Love my .17HMR!!!!!! [ QUOTE ] Apparently here in NC it is legal to use one on a deer [/ QUOTE ] I looked on the NCWRC's web page and found this "During the gun deer season, bow and arrows, pistols (as defined under manner of taking) and muzzleloading firearms are legal weapons." "Deer, bear and wild boar may be taken with a handgun during the established gun hunting season provided that the handgun has a barrel length at least 5.5 inches in length, that metallic center-fire cartridges firing single projectiles be used, that straight-walled ammunition must be as powerful as .357-caliber and no less than .357-caliber (.38 special excluded), and that bottleneck ammunition must be no less than .24-caliber with a total length, including the projectile, of no less than 2 inches. Muzzleloading pistols are not legal for hunting." This is a poorly writen law. I could not find anything that stated what rifle regs there are. I like the liberal bag limits, but , some things are a little backwards, no Sunday hunting, a lot of the laws only apply on private land, the public land I hunt you can only use a shotgun unless you are squirrel hunting then you can take a .22.
