Turkeygirl
So yesterday I was online and looking at employment listings in the area for nurses...right now I just feel liek I have no clue where I want to work, etc...I'm aiming for something part time or temporary so that I can be at camp next summer again. Anyway I was looking into online MSN programs, since I'd like to possibly go one for a Master's some day...well University of Phoenix is one I hear about alot, so I fill in a little thing online, apparently they have an RN to MSN program where it's like a bridge so if you already have another BS degree, not in nursing, you can bridge into the MSN. Not 5 minutes later they call me and so I end up talking forever with some admission's counselor of course. Supposedly fully accreditated and what not but my big question was what's the cost? I think she said it's a little over a year program with the bridge....$14,000? WHAT!? For a completely online program...I got my associates in nursing, and used my camp earnings to totally pay for that, and that was basically $5000 a year. I'm already paying back a $16,000 laon from where I went for my BS...I don't want more loans, lol! Well anyway I guess it's good to look into...supposedly she is calling back Tuesday to follow up, so I have to deal with that. In the meantime trying to enjoy my time off...but if you think of it, say a little prayer that God leads me to where I should work this winter...I'm not really sure... gone_postal
Is there still a shortage of nurses nation wide Ruth?? If that is the case, it won't be long and they will come to you! The nice thing about nursing is that you can get a job pretty much anywhere in the country....we all get sick at one time or another. I know around here many of the recent grads start out in the local nursing homes. Good luck and enjoy your free time while you still have it! Prayers too that you find your dream job soon! swohiodave
Ruth, Go get a job at a hospital and a lot of them will pay for your MSN. I work for a major hospital system around cincinnati and I know Cincinnati Childrens will pay for it. Get a job first and see who they promote for the degree. Tominator
I think we have a career student on our hands folks. I've seen your type. Yeah, Phoenix is up there for cost. You can get a master's a lot cheaper if you look around. I got mine online at Nova Southeastern in Florida. It cost me just under 10K. Most master's programs don't go more than a year though, so if you're looking for years of school to avoid work, you might want to apply to med school. fly
Hi Ruth, I'd be glad to discuss some things about obtaining a graduate degree in nursing. I teach on-line nursing classes and have been working for 2 years getting a nurse educator (MSN) program online. I've reviewed the program you've been looking at. Before committing I'd advise you to speak with some graduates of the programs and get their take on it. I'd also advise you to think hard about the program that is right for you. I say this because the new DNP (Doctorate of Nursing Practice) is gaining popularity throughout the Nation and will likely be the terminal degree for Nurse Practitioners and other Advance Practice Nurses. If you want to go into education the MSN would currently be the logical choice although there are some BSN-PhD programs out there. Anyway I'm around if you feel inclined. There are more online programs out there than you might think. Good ones are pricey but a lot of employers have tuition re-imbursement as other members have indicated.
